Why Do We Need Irrigation?

In Nigeria, we have the rainy season and the dry season. But people need to eat all year round! To grow crops like tomatoes, carrots, and lettuce in the dry months, we cannot wait for rain. We must bring the water to the farm ourselves.

Irrigation is simply the artificial application of water to the soil to help crops grow.

Why is it important?

• Insurance: It protects our crops if the rains stop unexpectedly.
• All-Year Farming: It allows farmers to plant and harvest even in December and January.
• Better Quality: Horticultural crops are mostly water. Proper irrigation makes them juicy and crunchy.

Surface Irrigation (The Traditional Way)

This is the oldest and simplest method. Here, we let gravity do the work. Water is released at the top of the farm and allowed to flow over the ground to the plants.

Common Types:

• Basin Irrigation: You create a small “pool” or basin around the base of a tree (like a mango or citrus tree) and fill it with water.
• Furrow Irrigation: You dig small trenches or gutters (furrows) between your ridges of crops. The water flows down these gutters and soaks into the roots.

Pros and Cons:

• Pros: It is very cheap. You don’t need expensive pipes or pumps.
• Cons: It wastes a lot of water because some evaporates and some sinks too deep where roots can’t reach it. It can also wash away the topsoil (erosion).

Sprinkler Irrigation (The Artificial Rain)

If you have ever seen a machine spinning and spraying water in a circle at a stadium or a large farm, you have seen a sprinkler. It pumps water through pipes and sprays it into the air through nozzles.

Why use Sprinklers?

• Even Coverage: It spreads water like natural rain over a large area.
• Good for Slopes: Unlike surface irrigation, you can use sprinklers on hilly ground without the water just running off to the bottom.
• Cooling: On very hot afternoons, it helps cool down the temperature around the plants.

The Downside:

• It can be expensive to buy the pipes and the pump.
• Strong winds can blow the water away from the plants.

Drip Irrigation (The “Smart” Way)

Drip irrigation is the most modern and efficient method. It uses tiny pipes with small holes (emitters) that lay right next to the stem of each plant. Water “drips” slowly, drop by drop, directly into the roots.

Why it is the “King” of Irrigation:

1. Water Saving: It uses 70% less water than other methods. No water is wasted on empty space or weeds.
2. Disease Control: Because the leaves stay dry (water only touches the roots), it prevents fungi and diseases that love wet leaves.
3. Fertilizer Power: You can mix your liquid fertilizer into the water (this is called Fertigation), and it goes straight to the plant’s “mouth.”

Watering Techniques & Maintenance

Even with the best equipment, how you water matters. Here are the golden rules for any SS1 student in the garden:

1. Timing is Everything

• Best Time: Early morning (before 9 AM) or late evening (after 5 PM).
• Worst Time: Afternoon. The sun will evaporate the water before the plant can drink it, and the hot water can actually “scald” the delicate leaves.

2. Know Your Soil

• Sandy Soil: Needs small amounts of water very often (it drains fast).
• Clay Soil: Needs a lot of water but less often (it holds water for a long time).

3. Maintenance Tips

• Clear the Clogs: Check the holes in your drip pipes or sprinkler heads to make sure sand or salt hasn’t blocked them.
• Check for Leaks: A leaking pipe is a waste of money and can create a swampy mess that breeds mosquitoes.
• Clean the Pump: If you use a machine, keep it oiled and clean so it doesn’t break down mid-season.
