What is Sustainability?
“Sustainability” is a big word for a simple idea: Don’t use up everything today so that there is nothing left for tomorrow. In horticulture, it means growing our flowers, fruits, and vegetables in a way that doesn’t ruin the soil or waste all the water. If we “treat the earth well,” it will keep feeding us forever.
Soil Conservation: Keeping the Earth Rich
Soil is the “bank account” of a farmer. If you keep withdrawing nutrients and never put any back, the account will go empty. Here is how we protect it:
- Covering the Soil (Cover Crops) Never leave the soil “naked.” When you aren’t growing your main crop, plant something like melon or cowpea.
- The Benefit: These plants act like a skin, protecting the soil from being baked by the sun or washed away by heavy rain.
- Terracing and Contouring If your garden is on a hill, don’t plant straight down the slope. If you do, the rain will turn into a “slide” and wash all your good soil to the bottom. Instead, plant across the hill (contours) or build “steps” (terraces).
- Organic Matter Instead of just using chemical fertilizers, add compost and manure.
- The Benefit: Chemicals give a quick “boost,” but organic matter builds the “structure” of the soil, making it feel like a sponge that holds onto food and water.
- Zero or Minimum Tillage Don’t dig up the soil too much. Every time you turn the soil over with a hoe or tractor, you break its natural structure and let the moisture escape. “No-till” farming keeps the soil’s natural “neighborhood” of worms and fungi alive.
Water Management: Every Drop Counts
In many parts of Nigeria, water is gold—especially in the dry season. We must use it wisely.
- Drip Irrigation Instead of using a hose to spray water everywhere (where most of it evaporates or grows weeds), we use small pipes with tiny holes that “drip” water exactly at the base of the plant.
- The Benefit: The plant gets 100% of the water, and we waste 0%.
- Mulching As we learned in organic farming, putting dry grass or woodchips on the soil is a lifesaver. It stops the sun from “stealing” the water from the ground. A mulched garden needs much less watering than a bare one.
- Rainwater Harvesting Don’t let the rain from your roof just run into the gutter. Use tanks or barrels to catch it. This “free water” can keep your nursery alive during a two-week break in the rains.
- Wastewater Recycling In urban areas, we can use “greywater”—the water from washing vegetables or laundry (if the soap is mild)—to water ornamental flowers and trees.
Why Does This Matter? (The Big Picture)
If we don’t practice sustainability:
- Desertification: The land becomes like a desert where nothing grows.
- Pollution: Too many chemicals wash into our streams, killing fish and making our drinking water dangerous.
- Cost: It becomes more and more expensive to grow food because the land is “tired.”

Environmental sustainability is about respect. We respect the soil by not overworking it, and we respect the water by not wasting it. As a student of horticulture, your goal is to leave the land better than you found it.
