Drawing the Perfect Eyebrows
In our beauty culture, the eyebrows are everything! They frame the face. If the brows are wrong, the whole makeup looks “off.”
- The Shape: Use a sharpened eye pencil. Start from the inner corner (aligned with the side of the nose) and end at the outer corner.
- The “Stroke” Technique: Do not draw one long, dark line like a “mark.” Instead, use light, feather-like strokes that look like real hair.
- Cleaning with Concealer: After drawing, use a flat brush with a little concealer to “carve” the edges. This makes the brow look sharp and professional.
Eyeshadow: Adding Color
Eyeshadow adds depth to the eyes. For a basic look, we use the “Three-Color Rule”:
- The Transition Color: A light brown or orange shade that matches the skin. Apply this all over the “crease” (the fold of the eye).
- The Lid Color: A brighter or shimmery color (like gold or bronze) applied directly on the eyelid.
- The Outer “V”: A darker color (like dark brown or black) at the outer corner of the eye to give it a “lift.”
The Secret: Blending! Use a soft brush to rub the edges where two colors meet. You shouldn’t see where one color ends and another begins.
Eyeliner and Mascara
- Eyeliner: This defines the shape of the eye.
- Top Liner: Keep it close to the lashes.
- Bottom Liner: Use a pencil for a softer look.
- Mascara: This makes the natural lashes look thicker and blacker.
- Safety: Never “pump” the mascara wand in and out of the tube; it pushes air inside and makes it dry out fast. Just twist it.
False Eyelashes (Strip Lashes)
Lashes take a makeup look from “Simple” to “Wow!”
- The Glue: Apply a thin line of glue to the lash strip. Wait for 30 seconds until the glue becomes “tacky” (sticky). If you put it on while it’s still wet/liquid, it will slide all over the eye.
- Placement: Use tweezers or your fingers to place the strip right on top of the natural lash line. Start from the middle, then press down the corners.
Lip Makeup: The Finishing Touch
Lips complete the face. You can choose a “Nude” look (natural) or a “Bold” look (bright).
- Lip Liner: Use a pencil that is slightly darker than your lipstick. This stops the lipstick from “bleeding” (leaking) into the skin. It also helps the lips look well-shaped.
- Lipstick Application:
- Matte: Dries flat and stays on for a long time. Great for long events.
- Gloss: Gives a “wet” and shiny look. Makes the lips look bigger.
- The Ombré Lip: A very popular style in Nigeria. Use a dark brown liner, a light pink or nude lipstick in the middle, and blend them with a brush or your finger.
Hygiene and Safety for Eyes and Lips
- No Sharing Mascara: Never use the same mascara wand on two different people. Use disposable wands if you are working on many clients.
- Sharpen Pencils: Before using an eye or lip pencil on a new person, sharpen it. This “shaves off” the old layer and makes it clean.
- Expired Products: If an eyeshadow smells funny or a lipstick has “sweat” (oil drops) on it, throw it away!
Class Practical Activity:
- The “Hand-Eye” Coordination: On the back of your hand, try to draw a perfect eyebrow using a pencil and then “clean” it with concealer.
The Glue Test: Practice applying a tiny bit of lash glue to a piece of paper. Wait 30 seconds and feel it with your finger to understand what “tacky” feels like compared to “wet.”
