Topic: Cosmetic Dermatology II
What is a Laser?
In the old days, if we wanted to change the skin, we had to scrub it or use chemicals. Today, we use Laser. “Laser” is actually a very thin, very powerful beam of light that is all one color.
- How it works: Different things in our skin (like red blood, brown melanin, or black tattoo ink) “eat” or absorb different colors of light.
- Targeting: A laser can be tuned to only hit the brown spots (melanin) without hurting the skin around it. It’s like a sniper for skin problems!
- The “Magic” of Heat: When the laser hits the target, it turns into heat. This heat can destroy a hair follicle, break up a dark spot, or trick the skin into making new collagen.
Popular Laser Treatments
In a modern clinic, you will see lasers used for three main things:
- Laser Hair Removal: The light targets the dark pigment in the hair root. It heats it up so much that the hair stops growing. It usually takes 6 to 8 sessions to work completely.
- Tattoo Removal: The laser “shatters” the big ink particles into tiny pieces. Your body’s cleaning system then carries the tiny ink pieces away.
- Skin Resurfacing: The laser makes tiny, microscopic holes in the skin. As the skin heals these tiny holes, it grows back smoother, tighter, and with fewer wrinkles.
LED Light Therapy (The Colors of Healing)
You might have seen people wearing glowing plastic masks on social media. This is LED Therapy. Unlike lasers, LED doesn’t get hot and doesn’t hurt.
- Red Light: This is for “Aging.” It reaches deep into the dermis to tell the cells to make more collagen. It’s great for healing and reducing redness.
- Blue Light: This is for “Acne.” It kills the bacteria that causes pimples.
- Yellow/Orange Light: This is for “Glowing.” It helps improve blood flow and makes the skin look less tired.
Microcurrent and Radiofrequency (The “Non-Surgical Lift”)
If a client wants their skin to look tighter but doesn’t want surgery, we use electricity and radio waves.
- Microcurrent: This uses a very tiny electrical current (you can’t even feel it!) to “workout” the muscles in the face. It lifts the eyebrows and sharpens the jawline. It’s like a gym session for your face.
- Radiofrequency (RF): This uses radio waves to heat the deep layers of the skin. This heat makes the old collagen “shrink” and tighten immediately, and then helps the body grow new, fresh collagen over the next few months.
Safety and the “Dark Skin” Warning
Technology is amazing, but it can be dangerous if the person using it is not trained properly.
- The Melanin Problem: Because lasers look for “dark color,” they can sometimes get confused on dark skin. If the laser hits the dark skin instead of the hair root, it can cause a burn or a permanent white spot. * The Specialist Rule: Clients with dark skin must only go to specialists who use “Long-Pulse” lasers (like the Nd:YAG laser) which are safe for brown and black skin.
- Eye Protection: Never, ever look at a laser beam. Both the stylist and the client must wear special “blackout” goggles during the treatment.
Classroom Practical & Discussion
- Reflection Test: Use a small flashlight and a mirror. Notice how the light bounces. Imagine if that light was 1,000 times stronger—that’s the power of a laser!
- Safety First: If you are using a blue LED light for acne, why is it important that the client’s skin is clean and has no cream on it? (Answer: Some creams can block the light or react with it).
- Discussion: Would you prefer to use a chemical peel or a laser to treat a dark spot? Why?
