La famille (the family) is a group of people related by blood or marriage, usually a father (le père), a mother (la mère) and children (les enfants).

By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:

Qu’est-ce que la famille ? (What is a family?)
La famille se compose du père, de la mère et des enfants.

There are two types of family: la famille nucléaire and la famille prolongée.

What should students remember when learning family words?
- Le or la: learn each word with its article, for example le père, la mère.
- L’ before a vowel: l’oncle, not le oncle.
- Masculine and feminine: the pairs change, for example le cousin and la cousine.
- Hyphens: write grand-père, beau-frère and belle-sœur with a hyphen.
- Plural: add s to most words, for example les frères, les cousines.
- Special letters: write père and mère with accents, and sœur with the joined letters œ.
