A verb (le verbe) is a word that shows an action or a state, and this lesson revises être (to be) and teaches avoir (to have).
Behavioural objectives
By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:
- say what a verb is in French;
- name the French subject pronouns and give their English meanings;
- make sentences with the verb être;
- conjugate the verb avoir with all the subject pronouns and give the English meaning;
- use the verb avoir in simple sentences, including to give age.
Qu’est-ce que le verbe ?
Le verbe est un mot d’action.
- Verbe: a word that tells what someone does or is, as in manger (to eat).
- Infinitif: the basic form of a verb, as in être and avoir.
- Conjuguer: to change the verb to match the subject pronoun.
- Être et avoir: two very common verbs that show a state or what someone has.
What are the subject pronouns in French?
Subject pronouns are the small words that stand for the person or people doing the verb.
| Pronom | English | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Je | I | Becomes j’ before a vowel. |
| Tu | You | One person, friendly. |
| Il | He | One boy or man. |
| Elle | She | One girl or woman. |
| Nous | We | Me and others. |
| Vous | You | Many people, or one person politely. |
| Ils | They | Boys, or boys and girls together. |
| Elles | They | Girls or women only. |
What is the conjugation of the verb être?
Être means “to be”, and its eight forms are shown below.
| Français | English |
|---|---|
| Je suis | I am |
| Tu es | You are |
| Il est | He is |
| Elle est | She is |
| Nous sommes | We are |
| Vous êtes | You are |
| Ils sont | They are |
| Elles sont | They are |
Révision: dix phrases avec le verbe être
Faites dix phrases avec le verbe être.
- Je suis dans la classe maintenant.
- Tu es dans la classe aujourd’hui.
- Il est un garçon.
- Elle est avec moi.
- Nous sommes ici.
- Vous êtes noirs.
- Ils sont beaux et forts.
- Elles sont belles et amicales.
- Il est mon petit garçon.
- Elle est intelligente comme moi.
What is the conjugation of the verb avoir?
Avoir means “to have”, and its eight forms are shown below.
| Français | English |
|---|---|
| J’ai | I have |
| Tu as | You have |
| Il a | He has |
| Elle a | She has |
| Nous avons | We have |
| Vous avez | You have |
| Ils ont | They have |
| Elles ont | They have |
Why do we write j’ai and not je ai?
- Elision: je drops its e and takes an apostrophe before a vowel sound.
- Example: j’ai (I have), j’aime (I like).
- Other pronouns: tu, il, elle, nous, vous, ils and elles do not change.
How do we use avoir in sentences?
Avoir is followed by the thing that a person owns or the person’s age.
Exemples de phrases avec avoir
- J’ai un bic: I have a pen.
- Tu as une règle: you have a ruler.
- Il a une voiture: he has a car.
- Elle a un ventilateur: she has a fan.
- Nous avons une craie: we have a piece of chalk.
- Vous avez un sac: you have a bag.
- Ils ont un cahier: they have an exercise book.
- Elles ont un livre: they have a book.
- Il a beaucoup de tables: he has many tables.
- J’ai une belle robe: I have a beautiful dress.
- Elle a quinze ans: she is fifteen years old.
- Vous avez un tableau: you have a board.
How do we give age in French?
- Rule: French uses avoir for age, so “I am twelve” is J’ai douze ans.
- Question: Quel âge as-tu ? means “How old are you?”.
- Do not use être: Je suis douze ans is wrong.
What mistakes should students avoid?
- Il a and ils ont: use a for one person and ont for more than one.
- Tu as and vous avez: use tu for one friend and vous for many people or a polite address.
- Ils sont and ils ont: sont comes from être (they are), ont comes from avoir (they have).
- Je ai: always write j’ai.
