What are Adverbs?

Adverbs are words that describe verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs. They tell us HOW, WHEN, WHERE, or HOW MUCH something happens.

Types of Adverbs:

1. Adverbs of Manner (HOW) Tell us how something is done:

• quickly, slowly, carefully, loudly, quietly
• She runs quickly.
• He speaks softly.

2. Adverbs of Time (WHEN) Tell us when something happens:

• yesterday, today, tomorrow, now, soon, always, never
• We went to school yesterday.
• I always do my homework.

3. Adverbs of Place (WHERE) Tell us where something happens:

• here, there, everywhere, nowhere, upstairs, outside
• Come here immediately.
• The children are playing outside.

4. Adverbs of Frequency (HOW OFTEN) Tell us how often something happens:

• always, usually, often, sometimes, rarely, never
• I usually eat breakfast at 7am.
• She never comes late to school.

Forming Adverbs from Adjectives:

Most adverbs are formed by adding -ly to adjectives:

• quick → quickly
• careful → carefully
• beautiful → beautifully
• slow → slowly
