What is Moderation?

Definition: Moderation means avoiding extremes in behavior, thoughts, and actions. It is the practice of being balanced, reasonable, and self-controlled in all areas of life. Moderation means not doing too much or too little of anything, but finding the right balance.

Biblical Foundation for Moderation:
Philippians 4:5: “Let your moderation be known unto all men. The Lord is at hand.”
1 Corinthians 9:25: “And every man that striveth for the mastery is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a corruptible crown; but we an incorruptible.”
Galatians 5:22-23: “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.”

1. In Eating and Drinking
Balanced Diet:

- Don’t waste food while others are hungry
- Thank God for all meals and snacks
Practical Steps:
- Eat three balanced meals daily
- Choose healthy snacks over junk food
- Drink plenty of water
- Avoid excessive sugar and processed foods
Biblical Teaching: 1 Corinthians 10:31: “Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.”
2. In Recreation and Entertainment
Balanced Fun:
- Enjoy recreation without becoming addicted
- Choose entertainment that honors God
- Balance fun with responsibilities
- Use leisure time constructively
Guidelines:
- Limit screen time and video games
- Choose movies, music, and books that build character

- Am I spending too much time on this activity?
- Is this helping me grow as a person?
- Would Jesus approve of what I’m watching/playing?

- Study diligently but get adequate rest
- Be productive without neglecting relationships
- Strive for excellence without perfectionism
For Students:
- Create study schedules with breaks
- Balance academic work with other activities
- Get enough sleep for good performance
- Ask for help when needed
Biblical Principle: Ecclesiastes 3:1: “To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under heaven.”
4. In Speech and Communication
Balanced Words:
- Speak truth without being harsh
- Be honest without being hurtful
