Content A pressure group is a group of people who come together to try and influence decisions made by government. They might try to influence new laws or, some of the government by adapting, campaigning, and protesting, to make their voices heard and get their message across.

Environmental groups: These are groups of people who care about the environment and want to protect it. For example, there might be a pressure group that is trying to stop a company from building a factory that will pollute a nearby river.

Consumer groups: These are groups of people who want to protect the rights of consumers, such as people who buy goods and services. They might protest if the same product that costs low in rural becomes expensive in the city.

Political groups: These are groups of people who want to influence government decisions or policy. For example, there might be a political group that is trying to get a government to change a law.

Religious groups: These are groups of people who want to influence government decisions on the basis of their religious beliefs.

There are yet a few examples of the many different types of pressure groups that exist. The important thing is that they all have one common goal: to influence the decisions made by those in power. Whether it is a small local group or a large national organization, pressure groups play an important role in a small local and want to make a difference. They use their collective voice and actions to try and influence government policy.

Types of Pressure Groups in Nigeria

Labour unions: These are groups of workers who come together to protect their rights and improve their working conditions. For example, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) fights for the rights of workers across the country.

Religious groups: These are groups of people who share the same religious beliefs and want to influence government decisions on the basis of these religious beliefs. For example, the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) represents the interests of Christians in Nigeria.

Ethnic groups: These are groups of people who share the same cultural background and want to influence government decisions that affect their culture. For example, Afenifere represents the interests of the Yoruba people in Nigeria.

Environmental groups: These are groups of people who care about the environment and want to protect it. For example, Environmental Rights Action/Friends of the Earth Nigeria (ERA/FoEN) works to protect Nigeria’s environment.

Women’s groups: These are groups of women who want to improve the rights and status of women in Nigeria. For example, Women in Nigeria (WIN) is a prominent group that is working to improve the lives of women in Nigeria.
