What They Have in Common

1. Both Are About Ethnic Groups Both ethnicity and tribalism deal with tribal or ethnic groups like Yoruba, Igbo, Hausa, Tiv, and others. They both recognize that people belong to different cultural groups.
2. Both Involve Group Identity In both cases, people identify with their ethnic group. They feel connected to others who speak their language and share their customs.
3. Both Deal with Cultural Differences Both acknowledge that different groups have different languages, foods, clothes, and traditions. They recognize cultural diversity exists.
4. Both Can Create Group Loyalty People feel loyal to their ethnic group in both cases. They support their group members and feel proud of their culture.
5. Both Are Passed Down Children learn about both from their parents. You are born into an ethnic group, and tribalistic attitudes can also be learned at home.

Important Difference to Remember While they have similarities, ethnicity is natural and good (being proud of your culture), but tribalism is bad (thinking your culture is better than others and treating people unfairly).

Example:

• Ethnicity: “I am Yoruba and I love my culture”
• Tribalism: “I am Yoruba and we are better than others”

Remember: They may look similar, but one builds identity while the other destroys unity!
