Meaning of National Identity

National identity means the things that make you belong to your country. It shows that you are a Nigerian and makes you different from people of other countries.

National identity helps us know:

• Where we come from
• What makes us special as Nigerians
• Why we are proud of our country
• How we can recognize other Nigerians

Elements of National Identity

Elements are the different parts that make up our national identity as Nigerians.

1. National Flag

• Green, white, green colors
• Green stands for our forests and farms
• White stands for peace and unity

2. National Anthem

• “Nigeria, we Hail Thee”
• We sing it to show love for Nigeria
• It reminds us to work together

3. National Pledge

• “I pledge to Nigeria my country”
• We recite it to promise loyalty
• It shows we love and serve Nigeria

4. Coat of Arms

• The national symbol with eagle
• Shows strength and pride
• Found on important government papers

5. National Language

• English is our official language
• Helps all Nigerians communicate
• Used in schools and government

6. National Currency

• The Naira (₦) is our money
• Used for buying and selling in Nigeria
• Shows we are one country

7. National Heroes

• People who helped build Nigeria
• Like Tafawa Balewa, Nnamdi Azikiwe
• We remember them on our money and stamps
