Learning Objectives

By the end of this lesson, pupils should be able to:

  • Define culture
  • List things that make up a culture
  • Distinguish the culture of the three major tribes in Nigeria

What is Culture?

Culture is the way of life of a group of people. It includes how they dress, what they eat, their language, festivals, and traditions.

Simple Definition: Culture is how a group of people live, dress, eat, and celebrate.

Things That Make Up Culture

  1. Language – The way people speak

Food – What people like to eat

Clothing – How people dress

Festivals – Special celebrations

Music and Dance – Songs and dances people enjoy

Religion – What people believe in

Greetings – How people say hello

The Three Major Tribes in Nigeria

1. Hausa-Fulani Culture (Northern Nigeria)

  • Language: Hausa
  • Clothing: Men wear flowing gowns called “Agbada” and caps called “Fila”
  • Food: Tuwo, Suya, Fura da Nono
  • Greetings: “Sannu” (Hello)

2. Yoruba Culture (Western Nigeria)

  • Language: Yoruba
  • Clothing: Men wear “Agbada” and “Fila”, Women wear “Gele” and “Iro and Buba”
  • Food: Amala, Egusi, Jollof rice, Pounded yam
  • Greetings: “Bawo” or “E ku aaro” (Good morning)

3. Igbo Culture (Eastern Nigeria)

  • Language: Igbo
  • Clothing: Men wear “Isiagu” (traditional shirt), Women wear colorful wrappers
  • Food: Jollof rice, Bitter leaf soup, Yam
  • Greetings: “Ndewo” (Hello)

Why Culture is Important

  • It makes us unique and special
  • It brings families and communities together
  • It teaches us about our ancestors
  • It helps us know who we are
