Introduction

Festivals are special times when people come together to celebrate! Every culture and religion has festivals. Today we will learn about different festivals and how they are celebrated.

Content

What is a Festival? A festival is:

• A special time of celebration
• When people come together to have fun
• A time to remember important events
• Usually happens every year
• Brings joy and happiness to communities

Examples of Festivals and Where They Are Practiced:

Religious Festivals:

1. Christmas – Celebrated by Christians worldwide (December 25)

Eid al-Fitr – Celebrated by Muslims worldwide (end of Ramadan)

Eid al-Adha – Celebrated by Muslims worldwide

Diwali – Celebrated by Hindus (Festival of Lights)

Cultural Festivals:

New Year Festival – Celebrated worldwide (January 1)

Carnival – Celebrated in many countries (Brazil, Trinidad, etc.)

Children’s Day – Celebrated in Nigeria (May 27)

Independence Day – Nigeria (October 1), other countries have theirs

Seasonal Festivals:

1. Harvest Festivals – When crops are gathered
2. Spring Festivals – Celebrating new growth
3. Winter Festivals – During cold season

Things Associated with Festivals:

1. Special Foods – cakes, rice, meat, sweets
2. Beautiful Clothes – traditional wear, new clothes
3. Music and Dance – traditional songs, modern music
4. Decorations – lights, flowers, banners, balloons
5. Gifts – presents for family and friends
6. Prayers – thanking God, making wishes
7. Family Gatherings – relatives coming together
8. Games and Fun – children playing, adults socializing
