Computer and GSM repair tools are the instruments a technician uses to open devices, test electrical parts, join or remove components and clean circuit boards.
Behavioural objectives
By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:
- name the types of screwdriver used on computers and phones;
- state the uses of spudgers, opening picks and suction cups;
- list three things a multimeter can check;
- name the tools used for soldering and state what each one does;
- state the uses of the hot air rework station, isopropyl alcohol and tweezers.
What are the main tools for computer and GSM repairs?
The main tools are screwdrivers, opening tools, the multimeter, soldering tools, the hot air rework station, isopropyl alcohol and tweezers.
| Tool | Main use |
|---|---|
| Precision screwdriver set | Removes tiny screws from phones and laptops |
| Spudger | Pries open cases and lifts connectors safely |
| Opening pick | Cuts through glue around a screen |
| Suction cup | Lifts the glass screen of a phone or tablet |
| Multimeter | Measures voltage, continuity and resistance |
| Soldering iron | Melts solder to join or free a part |
| Hot air rework station | Heats small chips and glue with controlled hot air |
| Isopropyl alcohol | Cleans corrosion and dirt from boards |
| Tweezers | Hold very small parts |
Which screwdrivers are used for computer and phone repairs?
Computer and phone repairs use small precision screwdrivers with different head shapes, because the screws are tiny and are not all the same.
- Precision set: a set of tiny screwdrivers with a handle that spins at the top, so you can press on the screw while turning with your fingers.
- Phillips (+): the most common type, with a cross-shaped head.
- Pentalobe: a five-point star head used by Apple on iPhones.
- Torx (six-pointed star): very common inside laptops and game consoles.
Maintenance tip
- Magnetise the tips: a magnetised tip holds the tiny screw so it does not fall into a dark corner of the device.
- Match the head: use the exact size and shape, so the screw head is not damaged.
Which tools are used to open phones and laptops?
Plastic spudgers, opening picks and suction cups are used to open phones and laptops without damaging them.
- Spudger: a plastic stick with a flat edge, used to pry open cases and pop up battery and ribbon cable connectors without causing a short circuit.
- Opening picks: thin plastic tools shaped like guitar picks, slid around the edge of a screen to cut through the glue.
- Suction cups: used to pull up the glass screen of a phone or tablet once the glue is softened.
Why plastic tools?
- No scratches: a metal screwdriver scratches plastic and glass.
- No short circuit: metal conducts electricity and can touch live parts near a battery.
- Not fingernails: modern devices are glued or held by tight clips, so fingernails cannot open them.
What is a multimeter used for?
A multimeter is a handheld instrument that measures electrical values such as voltage, continuity and resistance.
- Purpose: it shows what electricity is doing, since you cannot see a dead battery or a broken wire by looking at it.
What can a multimeter check?
- Voltage (V): checks if a battery has power, for example 3.7 V or 0 V on a phone battery.
- Continuity (Ω): gives a beep if electricity can pass from one end of a wire to the other. No beep means the wire is broken inside.
- Resistance (Ω): measures how much a component opposes the flow of current.
How do you test a cable for continuity?
- Disconnect the cable from any power source.
- Turn the multimeter dial to the continuity setting.
- Touch one probe to each end of the wire or cable pin.
- Listen for the beep. A beep means the path is good. Silence means a break.
Which tools are used for soldering?
Soldering is the joining of metal parts using melted solder, and it needs four main tools: a soldering iron, solder wire, flux and a desoldering pump.
- Soldering iron: a pen-like tool that gets very hot and melts the solder wire.
- Solder wire: a soft metal wire, traditionally a lead and tin mix, that melts easily and cools into a strong metal bond.
- Flux: a cleaning paste put on the metal before soldering, so the melted solder flows smoothly and sticks.
- Desoldering pump (solder sucker): works like a small vacuum to suck up melted solder when removing a broken part.
How do you solder a part such as a charging port?
- Apply a little flux to the joint.
- Heat the joint with the soldering iron.
- Touch the solder wire to the heated joint so it melts and flows.
- Remove the solder, then the iron.
- Let the joint cool without moving the part.
What are the hot air station and the cleaning tools?
The hot air rework station, isopropyl alcohol and tweezers are used for advanced GSM repairs where a regular soldering iron is too big.
- Hot air rework station: blows very hot, controlled air. It softens the glue behind a screen and removes tiny surface mount chips that have many small legs.
- Isopropyl alcohol (IPA): high-strength cleaning alcohol, used with an old toothbrush to clean green corrosion off a motherboard after water damage.
- Tweezers: fine, curved tweezers pick up parts smaller than a grain of rice.
What safety rules apply when using repair tools?
Safe repair work protects both the technician and the device.
- Switch off: power off the device and disconnect the battery before opening it.
- Heat: rest a hot iron in its stand and keep hot air away from skin and plastic.
- Fumes: work in a well-ventilated room when soldering, and avoid breathing the smoke.
- Tidy bench: keep screws and small parts in a tray so none are lost.
Evaluation
Workshop activity: “Identify the tool”
- A customer brings a phone that fell into a bucket of water. Which chemical and which brush will you reach for first?
- Which tool will you use to check if a “dead” charging cable is carrying electricity?
- Why should you use a plastic spudger instead of a metal one when working near a battery?
- What does flux do before soldering?
- Name three things a multimeter can check.
Assignment
List the four soldering tools described in this lesson and state the use of each one.
