About Social & Citizenship Studies Lesson Notes

Social and Citizenship Studies is one of the approved junior secondary subjects in Nigeria’s revised national curriculum. It teaches pupils how they belong to a family, a community and a nation, and what they owe and are owed as citizens.

On this site the notes start with JSS1. First Term covers an introduction to the subject, the individual and society, socialisation, civic responsibility, and the rights and duties of citizens. Second Term covers national identity and unity, leadership, democracy, the rule of law, security and safety, peace and conflict, and social justice. Third Term covers human rights and the rights of a child. The JSS2 and JSS3 notes are not published yet.

What students learn

By the end of JSS1, a student who has worked through these notes should be able to:

  • Explain how an individual relates to the family and to society, and how people learn the values of their society through socialisation
  • Describe civic responsibility and give examples of how a citizen can show it
  • State the rights and duties of a citizen
  • Describe what makes up national identity and explain why national unity matters
  • Explain leadership, and the main ideas of democracy and the rule of law
  • Describe ways of keeping safe, the causes and effects of conflict, and how peace is kept
  • Explain what social justice means
  • State basic human rights, including the rights of a child

How we prepare our lesson notes

Each note covers one topic for one class and one term, and the notes are arranged in teaching order. Every note has behavioural objectives, the lesson content in short sections, evaluation questions and an assignment, and the questions and assignment are drawn from the same note.

Before publication, notes are edited for accuracy, plain language and the right level for the class. Teachers can then use them as a clear starting point and adapt them to their own pupils.

Every note is free to read online. A PDF or Word copy of one subject costs ₦1,000 for one term, or ₦2,000 for all three terms. If you find a mistake, tell us and we will correct it.
