Work is any activity of the mind or the body that we do to achieve a result or to produce something useful. Manual work uses physical strength, and intellectual work uses thinking skills. The dignity of labour means that all honest work deserves equal respect.
Behavioural objectives
By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:
- Define work and give examples of manual and intellectual work.
- State the importance of work.
- Explain the dignity of labour and why every honest job deserves respect.
- State the social values of work.
What is Work?
Think about your typical day. Your parents go to the office or the market, your teacher comes to class to teach, and even you spend hours studying. All of these are forms of Work.
Work is any activity (mental or physical) that we do to achieve a result or to produce something useful. It is through work that we provide the things we need to survive, like food, clothes, and houses.
There are two main types of work
- Manual Work: This involves using your physical strength (e.g., farming, carpentry, or cleaning).
- Intellectual Work: This involves using your brain and thinking skills (e.g., doctor, lawyer, or computer programmer).
Importance of Work
Why do we bother to work? Why not just sleep all day? Work is important for several reasons:
- To Earn a Living: Most people work so they can get paid (salary or profit). This money helps them buy food, pay school fees, and take care of their families.
- To Solve Problems: Doctors work to heal the sick. Engineers work to build roads. Work helps us solve the challenges we face in life.
- To Help the Country Grow: When many people work, the country produces more goods and services. This makes the nation wealthy and strong.
- Self-Development: Work helps you discover your talents. For example, you might not know you are good at building things until you try carpentry.
Dignity of Labour
This is a very important concept. Dignity of Labour means that all types of honest work are respected equally. It teaches us that no job is “low” or “shameful” as long as it is legal and helps society. A person who sweeps the street to keep us healthy is just as important as a manager sitting in a big office.
Why should we respect every job?
- Interdependence: The doctor needs the farmer for food, and the farmer needs the doctor when he is sick. We all need each other!
- Honesty is Key: It is better to do a “simple” job like washing cars and earn honest money than to be a thief or a fraudster.
- Pride in Work: If you do your job well, you should be proud of it, whether you are a shoemaker or a pilot.
Social Values of Work
Work does more than just put money in our pockets; it changes how we live with others. These are the Social Values of work:
- Discipline: Work teaches us to wake up on time, follow rules, and be organised.
- Cooperation: Most jobs require working in a team. This teaches us how to get along with different people.
- Service to Others: Work is a way of showing love to our community. By doing your job well, you are making life easier for someone else.
- Respect: In society, people who work hard are usually respected. Work gives a person a “good name.”
Evaluation
- What is the difference between “Manual Work” and “Intellectual Work”? Give one example of each.
- Explain the term “Dignity of Labour” to your younger brother or sister.
Assignment
- Imagine a world where nobody worked for one week. Mention two things that would happen.
- Discussion: Is it better to be an idle rich person or a hardworking person with a small income? Why?
