Definition of History – SS3 Nigerian History Lesson Note (First Term)

History is the study of past events, societies and individuals, and the interpretation and analysis of those events. It tells the story of events, wars and circumstances that took place in the past. We teach it to help students understand change, learn from mistakes, think critically, empathise with others and preserve culture.

What is history?

History is the study of past events, societies and individuals, and the interpretation and analysis of those events. History is a subject that tells the story of events, wars and circumstances that took place in the past.

Why do we study history?

We teach history for several reasons:

1. History helps us understand how societies, cultures and individuals have evolved, providing context for current events and trends.
2. By studying historical events and their consequences, we can learn from past mistakes and make better decisions in the present and future.
