God is the controller of the universe because He created everything, sustains it and has supreme power over it. According to Genesis 1:26-31, God made man in His own image and likeness and gave him the responsibility of supervising the rest of creation. Man therefore depends on God for his existence and sustenance.
Behavioural objectives
By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:
- explain why man is the highest point of God’s creation;
- state the responsibility God gave to man;
- list ways in which creation shows the nature and sovereignty of God;
- state the lessons to learn from the creation of man.
What is man’s place in God’s creation? (Genesis 1:26-31)
Man, no doubt, is the Zenith (highest point) of God’s creation. This is shown by the care and ceremony that accompanied his creation. God also consulted the two other members of the Holy Trinity, that is, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit, in the creation of man: “Let us make man” (Genesis 1:26). This shows man’s position in God’s scheme of things.
Furthermore, the responsibility which God placed upon man shows his importance in the plan of God for the creation. Every other creature was handed over to him for supervision. Indeed, man is the crown of God’s creation.
How is God the chief controller of creation?
As the chief controller, God is the one on whom the existence, nourishment and sustenance of the entire creation depend. Man is incomparable with Him. The highest responsibility of man is to assemble, organise or supervise what God has already made.
How does creation demonstrate the nature of God and His sovereignty?
- God is the supreme controller of the universe.
- He is a perfect God. All He made was “Good”.
- The sequence of creation makes Him God of pattern and order.
- His ability to create the world out of nothing makes Him the God of creativity, innovation and originality.
- His spoken word is real and potent.
- He has created everything, but nobody created Him. He is the Alpha and Omega.
What lessons can we learn from the creation of man?
- God created man in His own “image” and “likeness”.
- Hence, man is different from all God’s creatures.
- Man is the earthly lord over all.
- God provides man with all he needs to make life easy.
- God has supreme power over all that He created, including man. Hence man depends on God for his sustenance.
