Poultry farming is perhaps the most popular type of livestock business in Nigeria. Whether you are in a village or a big city, you’ll likely see someone keeping chickens. It is fast, profitable, and provides the eggs and meat we love to eat.

Why is Poultry Farming Important?

Poultry birds aren’t just for decoration; they are a powerhouse for the economy and our health.

  • Quick Protein: Eggs and chicken meat are some of the cheapest and best sources of protein. They help children grow well and adults stay healthy.
  • Fast Money: Unlike cattle that take years to grow, some chickens (broilers) are ready to be sold in just 6 to 8 weeks!
  • Waste as Fertilizer: Poultry droppings are very “strong.” Farmers use them as organic manure to grow huge vegetables and maize.
  • Feathers for Industry: Feathers are used to make pillows, mattresses, and even some traditional decorations or shuttlecocks for sports.

The Different Types of Poultry

Not all birds are the same. In poultry farming, we choose the bird based on what we want to sell.

Type of Bird Purpose Key Characteristic
Broilers Meat They grow very fast and have a lot of flesh. They are usually sold at 2 months old.
Layers Eggs These are “egg machines.” They start laying at about 5 months old and can lay for over a year.
Cockerels Meat These are male chickens. They grow slower than broilers but are very tough and survive diseases better.
Turkeys Meat Much larger than chickens. They are usually expensive and in high demand during Christmas and New Year.
Ducks Meat/Eggs They love water. They are very hardy and rarely get sick compared to chickens.

Poultry House Design

If you want your birds to be happy and lay many eggs, you must give them a good home. A poultry house is often called a “Pen.”

  1. Types of Housing Systems:
  1. Deep Litter System: The birds walk on a floor covered with wood shavings or rice husks (litter). It’s like a big bedroom where they move freely.
  2. Battery Cage System: Mostly for layers. The birds are kept in metal cages. The eggs roll out automatically, which prevents the birds from breaking or eating them.
  1. Key Design Features:
  • The Roof: Should have a good “overhang” (extend past the walls) to prevent rain from blowing inside.
  • The Walls: Usually, the bottom 2 or 3 feet are made of blocks, and the rest is made of wire mesh to let in plenty of air.
  • The Floor: Must be made of concrete so it is easy to wash and disinfect after the birds are sold.

Essential Equipment in the Poultry House

To run a poultry farm, you need more than just a building. You need the “furniture” for the birds:

  • Feeders: Long trays or hanging plastic buckets where you put the feed. They should be designed so birds don’t step in the food.
  • Drinkers (Waterers): These provide clean water. Some are automatic, while others are simple plastic fountains.
  • Brooders: For baby chicks, we use heat lamps or charcoal pots to keep them warm because they don’t have enough feathers yet.
  • Nests: For layers, we provide wooden boxes with soft grass inside where they can go to feel safe and lay their eggs.

Management Secrets for Success

If you want to be a successful poultry farmer, follow these three rules:

  1. Bio-security: Don’t let every visitor enter your poultry house. People carry germs on their shoes that can kill your whole flock in one day!
  2. Clean Water: If you wouldn’t drink the water, don’t give it to your birds.
  3. Ventilation: Fresh air is the best “medicine.” A smelly, stuffy poultry house will always have sick birds.

Class Activity / Review

  1. If you want to start a business to sell meat in just two months, which type of poultry bird would you buy?
  2. What is the purpose of “litter” (wood shavings) on the floor of a poultry house?
  3. Homework: Draw a simple poultry house in your notebook. Label the wire mesh, the concrete floor, and the roof.
