What are Hides and Skins?
In the livestock industry, we often focus on meat, but the “by-products” are just as important.
- Hides: These come from large animals like cattle (cows), buffalo, or horses. They are thick and heavy.
- Skins: These come from smaller animals like goats, sheep, or pigs. They are thinner and softer.
If we just leave a skin outside, it will rot and smell within hours. Processing is the way we stabilize these skins so they become “Leather”—a material that is strong, flexible, and lasts for decades.
Pre-Tanning: Preparing the Canvas
Before the actual tanning begins, the skin must be cleaned. Think of this as the “Laundry Phase”:
- Curing: The raw skin is covered in salt or dried in the sun to stop it from rotting immediately after it leaves the animal.
- Soaking: The salt is washed off with water to make the skin soft again.
- Liming & Unhairing: The skin is soaked in a “lime” solution (calcium hydroxide). This loosens the hair so it can be scraped off, leaving a smooth surface.
- Fleshing: Any leftover bits of fat or meat on the inside of the skin are scraped away using a sharp, curved knife.
Tanning Methods (The Magic Transformation)
Tanning is the most important part. It is the chemical process that changes the skin fibers so they can no longer rot. There are two main ways we do this in Nigeria:
- Vegetable Tanning (The Traditional Way)
This is the method used in famous places like the ancient tanneries of Kano.
- How it works: We use natural “tannins” found in the bark, leaves, or fruits of certain trees (like the Acacia or Bagaruwa pods).
- The Result: The leather is usually thick, brownish, and has a distinct “woody” smell. It is great for belts, soles of shoes, and saddles. It is also environmentally friendly!
- Mineral/Chrome Tanning (The Modern Way)
This is what most large factories use today.
- How it works: It uses chemical salts, specifically Chromium.
- The Result: It is much faster than vegetable tanning (taking days instead of weeks). The leather is very soft, flexible, and can be dyed into any color (blue, red, yellow). This is the leather used for soft jackets, handbags, and expensive car seats.
Finishing: Making it Beautiful
After tanning, the leather is still a bit rough. The “Finishing” stage includes:
- Dyeing: Adding color.
- Fat-liquoring: Adding oils back into the leather so it doesn’t become brittle and crack.
- Buffing: Sanding the surface to make it perfectly smooth.
- Embossing: Pressing patterns into the leather (like making cow leather look like crocodile skin!).
Leather Products: What do we make?
Leather is one of the most versatile materials in the world.
- Fashion: Shoes, bags, belts, watch straps, and jackets.
- Home: Sofas, chairs, and rugs.
- Industrial: Gaskets for engines, sports equipment (footballs/gloves), and horse saddles.

- Local History: Nigeria is famous for “Moroccan Leather,” which actually comes from Sokoto goats! Why do you think people call it “Moroccan” instead of “Nigerian”?
- The “Real vs. Fake” Test: How can you tell if a bag is made of real leather or “synthetic” (plastic) leather? (Hint: Think about the smell and how it reacts to a tiny bit of heat).
Project: Find an old leather belt or shoe at home. Look at the edges. Can you see the fibers? Does it look like it was vegetable-tanned or chrome-tanned based on how stiff it is?
