Fashion accessories are items we wear or carry to complete and improve our main clothes.
Behavioural objectives
By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:
- Define fashion accessories and state why people wear them.
- Name and describe four types of jewellery, hats and shoes.
- State the rules for wearing jewellery.
- Choose suitable shoes, hats and jewellery for a given occasion.
- State simple ways of caring for accessories.
What are fashion accessories?
Fashion accessories are items worn or carried to complement the main clothes, such as jewellery, hats and shoes.
- Main meal and seasoning: a dress or shirt is the main meal, and accessories are the seasoning.
- Change of look: a plain gown looks different once you add a necklace, a hat or classic shoes.
- Personality: accessories help us show our taste and character.
- Culture and status: some accessories show a person’s culture, tradition or position.
What are the three major categories covered in this lesson?
- Jewellery: the sparkle, which finishes the outfit.
- Hats: the crown, worn on the head.
- Shoes: the foundation, worn on the feet.
What is jewellery?
Jewellery is any small decorative item worn for personal adornment.
What materials are used to make jewellery?
- Precious metals: gold and silver, which are expensive.
- Local materials: beads and wood, which are cheaper and common in Nigeria.
- Plastic: light and low in cost, used for fashion jewellery.
What are the types of jewellery?
There are four common types of jewellery: necklaces, earrings, bracelets and bangles, and rings.
- Necklaces: worn around the neck, either as tight “chokers” or as long chains.
- Earrings: worn on the earlobes, such as studs, hoops and “drop” earrings.
- Bracelets and bangles: worn around the wrist.
- Rings: worn on the fingers, often as a sign of friendship or marriage.
What are the rules for wearing jewellery?
- Balance: very big earrings usually need a simple necklace, so the jewellery does not overpower your face.
- Occasion: do not wear heavy, dangling party jewellery to school or sports, because it distracts and can cause injury.
What are hats and headwear?
Hats and headwear are coverings worn on the head for protection, fashion or tradition.
What are the types of hats?
There are four common types of headwear: the beret, the baseball cap, the fedora and cultural headwear.
- Beret: a flat, round hat used in some school uniforms and for a neat, classy look.
- Baseball cap: a casual cap with a peak that shades the eyes from the sun.
- Fedora: a felt hat with a brim, usually worn for formal events.
- Cultural headwear: the gele for women and the fila for men in Yoruba culture.
Why do people wear hats?
- Protection: a hat shields the hair and skin from sun and rain.
- Fashion: it can hide a “bad hair day”.
- Confidence: it adds height and a finished look.
- Respect and tradition: in Nigerian culture, headwear shows respect at ceremonies.
What are the types of shoes?
Shoes are coverings for the feet that protect them and show where we are going.
There are four common types of shoes: casual shoes, formal shoes, sandals and slippers, and boots.
| Type | Examples | Best used for |
|---|---|---|
| Casual shoes | Sneakers, trainers | Comfort and movement |
| Formal shoes | Oxfords for boys, pumps or heels for girls | Weddings, church, office work |
| Sandals and slippers | Open sandals, home slippers | Hot weather and relaxing at home |
| Boots | Work boots, rain boots | Work, cold or rainy weather |
How do we choose shoes?
- Size: never buy tight shoes because they look fine, as they will hurt your feet.
- Matching: match the colour of your shoes with your belt or bag.
- Purpose: choose the type that fits the activity, such as trainers for sports.
- Long walks: avoid high heels for a long trek or a mountain climb, as they strain the feet and can cause falls.
How do we choose and care for accessories?
Good accessories are comfortable, suit the occasion and are kept clean and safe.
- Comfort first: a heavy earring or a pinching shoe is a burden and cannot be called fashionable.
- Suit the occasion: plain items for school, richer items for parties and ceremonies.
- Jewellery care: wipe after use and store in a box or pouch to avoid tangles.
- Hat care: keep hats where they will not be crushed.
- Shoe care: brush off dust, clean regularly and let wet shoes dry.
Evaluation
- Which accessory is best for protecting your eyes from sunlight?
- Mention three materials used in making local jewellery.
- Why is it wrong to wear high heels for a long trek or a mountain climb?
- Name the four common types of shoes.
- State the two rules for wearing jewellery.
Assignment
Draw one type of jewellery, one hat and one pair of shoes in your notebook. Write under each one the place where you would wear it.
