The Coming Of The Holy Spirit – The Pentecost Acts 2:1 – 39 JSS3 Christian Religious Studies (CRS) Lesson Note

SUB-TOPIC: THE COMING OF THE HOLY SPIRIT(ACTS 2:1-13) 

At the Passover feast,Jesus revealed a lot of things to his disciples. He tells them of the person who will betray him, he also predicts Peter’s denial and His eventual death. When he noticed that they were afraid, he started to comfort them. He encouraged them to trust in God and to trust in him. He informed them that there are many rooms in his father’s house. He was going to prepare a place for them and that he would come back to take them. He also informed themthat they knew where he was going. Thomas(one of the disciples) said that they didn’t know where he was going. Jesus answered,” I am the Way and the Truth and the Life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you know me you would know my Father as well”. 

Philip then asked Jesus to show them the father but Jesus asked Philip if he does not know him after all this while. He went further to tell them that anyone who has seen Him has seen the Father. In addition,He told them that anyone who has faith in him will do what he has been doingandeven greater things. He continued that anyone who asks for anything in his name will receiveit. Jesus further taught them on the need to love him. Anyone who loves himwill obey his commandments and he will ask the Father to give them another counselor to be with themforever. He promised not to leave them as orphans. \

At this juncture, he told them that before long, the world would not see him anymore but the disciples would see him. When the Holy Spirit comes they would know that He was in His Father, and they in HimandHein them. The Father would send the Holy Spirit in Jesus’ Name and the Holy Spirit would teach them all things. Anyone who obeys Jesus would love him and they would show themselves to that person. When Judas asked why Jesus should show Himself to them(disciples) instead of the world. He answered: “Anyone who loved me will obey my teaching. My Father will love them,and we will come tothem and make our home with them. Anyone who does not love me will not obey my teaching. These words you hear are not my own; they belong to the Father who sent me.” John 14:23-24. Jesus informed the disciples that he had these things while still with but the Holy Spirit whom the Father will send in his name will remind them of everything. He bestowed peaceonthem. He once more encouraged them not to be afraid or troubled. He reminded them that he would no longer be with them but if they loved him, they would be happy that he is going to the father. He stressed that he is telling them these so that they will believe when it happens

MORAL LESSONS 

1. Jesus told his disciples to believe and trust in God. As Christains we are also requiredtobelieve in God. In the Apostles Creed, the first important thing is the believe in God. 
2. As followers of Christ,we should learn to love God,our neighbours and our enemies as well. 
3. We should learn to pray for others as Christ prayed for his disciples. 
4. As Jesus assured the disciples of peace,we should be advocates of peace in our homes,communities and nations at large. 
5. As Christians,we must obey the commandments of God if we want God to love us. 
6. Jesus knew the needs of his disciples,we should endeavour to learn the needs of others and reach out to them.
