MEANING OF PERSECUTION

Persecution refers to the suffering, harassment, or hostility that Christians face because of their faith. In the early church, Christians were persecuted by both religious and political authorities, as well as by individuals who were opposed to the message of Jesus Christ. This persecution often involved imprisonment, torture, and even death.

The first Christian martyr was Stephen, one of the seven deacons. Stephen was known for his wisdom and the power of the Holy Spirit. He performed miracles and boldly preached the gospel. However, his powerful preaching angered the Jewish leaders, and they falsely accused him of blasphemy. Stephen was brought before the Sanhedrin (the Jewish court), where he defended his faith by recounting the history of Israel and showing how the Jewish people had continually resisted God’s messengers.

As Stephen spoke, the Jewish leaders became enraged and dragged him outside the city to stone him. Stephen remained steadfast in his faith, even praying for his persecutors as he died. His last words were a plea to God to forgive those who were killing him. This marked the beginning of a widespread persecution of the church, led by Saul (later known as Paul).

REASONS FOR PERSECUTION OF CHRISTIANS

1. Preaching the Gospel: Many religious authorities opposed the message of the gospel and saw it as a threat to their power.
2. Jesus as the Messiah: Christians’ claim that Jesus was the Messiah angered many Jewish leaders.
3. Roman Opposition: The Roman authorities viewed Christianity as a rebellious sect that refused to worship the emperor.
4. Jealousy: Some people were jealous of the growing influence and power of the early church.
5. Religious Tension: Christianity was seen as a breakaway from traditional Jewish beliefs, causing tension between the two groups.

WAYS TO CURB PERSECUTION

Intercessory Prayer: Christians must pray for their persecutors and for the strength to endure persecution.

1. Spiritual Growth: Christians should continue to grow in their faith to withstand trials and challenges.
2. Christian Fellowship: Believers should support one another, providing encouragement during difficult times.
3. Obedience to God: Despite persecution, Christians must remain obedient to God’s commands and continue to spread the gospel.
