Replacing RAM or a hard disk means taking out an old memory or storage part and fitting a new one to make a slow computer faster or give it more space.

Think of it like a student:

  • Upgrading RAM: like giving the student a bigger desk, so more books can be open at the same time.
  • Upgrading the hard disk: like giving the student a bigger school bag, so more books can be carried home.

Behavioural objectives

By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:

  1. State what RAM and a hard disk are and what each one does.
  2. Name the signs that a computer needs a RAM or storage upgrade.
  3. List in order the steps for replacing RAM.
  4. List in order the steps for replacing a hard disk.
  5. State the safety rules for handling computer parts.

What is RAM?

RAM (Random Access Memory) is the temporary memory that holds the programs and files the computer is using right now.

  • Temporary: everything in RAM is lost when the computer is switched off.
  • Shape: a thin, long stick (module) with gold contacts along the bottom edge.
  • Location: it sits in long, thin slots on the motherboard.
  • Sign you need more: the computer is slow or “hangs” when many apps or browser tabs are open.

What is a hard disk?

A hard disk is the storage part of the computer where the operating system (Windows), programs, photos and files are saved permanently.

There are two kinds of storage drive: the HDD and the SSD.

HDD (Hard Disk Drive)

  • How it works: it stores data on spinning metal disks read by a moving head.
  • Weakness: it is slower and can be damaged by knocks because it has moving parts.

SSD (Solid State Drive)

  • How it works: it stores data on memory chips and has no moving parts.
  • Strength: it is faster, quieter and handles knocks better.

What is the difference between RAM and a hard disk?

Feature RAM Hard disk (HDD or SSD)
Job Holds work in progress Stores files and programs
When power is off Data is lost Data stays
Slow computer sign Hangs with many apps open Takes a long time to start up and open files
Full-up sign Not applicable No space left to save files

What tools and checks are needed before replacing a part?

  • Screwdriver: a small Phillips (cross-head) screwdriver removes the case and drive screws.
  • Compatible part: the new RAM must be the type the motherboard supports (for example DDR3 or DDR4).
  • Matching connector: a SATA drive needs a SATA data port and a power cable.
  • Backup: copy important files to a flash drive or another safe place first.
  • Clean workspace: use a dry, tidy table with good light.

How do you replace RAM?

To replace RAM, switch off and unplug the computer, release the clips, lift out the old stick and press in the new one.

  1. Safety first: turn off the computer and unplug the power. For a laptop, remove the battery if possible.
  2. Locate the slots: open the side panel of the system unit and find the long, thin slots on the motherboard.
  3. Remove the old RAM: push down the small plastic clips at both ends of the slot. The stick pops up. Lift it out by the edges.
  4. Find the notch: look for the small gap on the bottom edge of the new RAM stick.
  5. Line it up: match the notch with the “hump” in the slot. It fits only one way.
  6. Press down: push firmly until the side clips click back into place.
  7. Test: close the case, switch on and check that the computer starts normally.

How do you replace a hard disk?

To replace a hard disk, unplug its power and data cables, unscrew the old drive, fit the new one and reconnect the cables.

  1. Safety first: turn off the computer and unplug the power.
  2. Unplug the cables: find the drive (usually a rectangular box). Remove the power cable from the PSU and the flat SATA data cable.
  3. Unscrew: remove the small screws holding the drive in its metal shelf (the drive bay).
  4. Slide out: pull the old drive out.
  5. Insert the new drive: slide the new SSD or HDD into the bay and screw it tight.
  6. Reconnect: plug the SATA data cable and the power cable firmly into the new drive.
  7. Prepare the drive: a new drive is empty, so install the operating system and restore files from your backup.

What safety rules must you follow when replacing parts?

Computer parts are delicate, so follow these rules every time.

  • The “gold” rule: do not touch the gold contacts on RAM or the drive connectors. Oil and dirt from your fingers can cause a poor connection.
  • Do not force it: if a part does not fit, it is probably the wrong way round. Check the notches again.
  • Static electricity: touch a bare metal part of the case before you touch the RAM. This discharges static from your body so it cannot damage the part.
  • Power off: always unplug the computer before opening it.
  • Hold by the edges: carry RAM and drives by their edges only.

What happens after the upgrade?

Part upgraded What you will notice
RAM You can open many apps (Chrome, Word, games) at once without the computer “hanging”.
Hard disk (SSD) The computer starts much faster and files open quickly.
  • Teacher’s note: a replaced hard disk is empty. Install a fresh copy of Windows and restore files from a backup.

What is the safety checklist for students?

  • Did I unplug the power?
  • Did I touch the metal case to remove static?
  • Did I handle the RAM by the edges?
  • Did I hear the “click” when installing the RAM?
  • Are the SATA and power cables plugged in tightly to the new drive?

Practical activity

  • Task: the teacher brings a system unit to the desk.
  • Students do: identify the RAM slots and the hard disk SATA cables without removing them.

Evaluation

  1. Why is it important to line up the notch on the RAM stick before pressing it down?
  2. If a computer is slow when opening many internet tabs, which part should you upgrade: RAM or hard disk?
  3. What is the difference between an HDD and an SSD in terms of speed?
  4. Why should you not touch the gold contacts on computer components?

Assignment

Write the steps for replacing a hard disk in the correct order, and state two safety rules to follow while doing it.
