A GSM accessory is an extra item used with a mobile phone to make it more useful, safer or easier to use.

  • Phone and accessories: the phone is like the body, and accessories are like shoes, a hat or a water bottle.
  • Not compulsory: the phone works without most accessories, but they make life easier and safer.
  • This lesson: the three most common accessories are earphones, chargers and power banks.

Behavioural objectives

By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:

  1. Define a GSM accessory and name the three common ones.
  2. State the two types of earphones and the safety rule for using them.
  3. Name the parts of a charger and the three common charging ports.
  4. Explain what a power bank is and what mAh means.
  5. Identify an original accessory from a fake one.
  6. List safety rules for using chargers and power banks.

What are earphones and headphones?

Earphones are small speakers worn in or on the ears to listen to audio privately.

  • Uses: listening to music, videos or phone calls without people around you hearing.
  • Microphone: a small part on the earphone that lets you talk hands-free.
  • Headphones: larger types that cover the whole ear, used the same way.

What are the types of earphones?

There are two types of earphones: wired earphones and wireless (Bluetooth) earbuds.

  • Wired earphones: plug into the headphone jack or the charging port of the phone, and never need charging.
  • Wireless (Bluetooth) earbuds: connect to the phone by radio waves, so there are no wires to tangle.

Wireless earbuds have a small battery of their own, so they must be charged.

How do we use earphones safely?

  • Volume: never set the volume to 100%.
  • Time: listening to very loud music for a long time can permanently damage your hearing.
  • Breaks: take the earphones out now and then to rest your ears.
  • Road safety: keep the volume low when walking near roads so you can hear vehicles.

What is a phone charger?

A charger is an accessory that supplies electrical power to refill a phone battery.

  • Adapter: the block that plugs into the wall socket.
  • USB cable: the wire that joins the adapter to the phone.
  • Importance: without a charger, the phone battery runs out and the phone switches off.

How does a charger work?

  1. Plug the adapter into the wall socket.
  2. The adapter changes the mains electricity into a low, safe power for the phone.
  3. The USB cable carries this power to the phone.
  4. The phone battery stores the power.

What are the common charging ports?

There are three common charging ports: Micro-USB, USB Type-C and Lightning.

Port Shape Found on Reversible?
Micro-USB Trapezoid Older Android phones No, it goes in one way only
USB Type-C Oval Almost all new phones Yes, it plugs in either way
Lightning Small flat connector Older iPhones Yes

How do we care for a charger?

  • Cable: do not bend it sharply or pull it by the wire. Hold the plug.
  • Heat: do not leave the adapter in a hot place.
  • Water: keep the charger dry.
  • Matching: use a charger made for your phone type.

What is a power bank?

A power bank is a portable battery that stores electricity to charge a phone when there is no mains power.

  • Where it helps: when travelling, at school, or during a power outage (NEPA).
  • Everyday name: it works like a reserve tank for your phone.

What are the key terms for power banks?

  • Capacity (mAh): milliampere-hour, the unit that shows how much charge the power bank can store.
  • Example: a 10,000 mAh power bank can usually charge a normal phone about 2 or 3 times.
  • Ports: most power banks have several USB ports, so you can charge a phone and a tablet together.
  • Real use: some energy is lost as heat, so a power bank gives slightly fewer full charges than the sum suggests.

How do we use power banks safely?

  • Heat: do not leave a power bank in a hot car or under the sun. It can overheat and burst or catch fire.
  • Swelling: if it looks swollen or fat, stop using it at once and tell an adult.
  • Quality: buy a power bank from a trusted shop.

What other accessories are used with phones?

Other common GSM accessories protect the phone or add extra features.

  • Phone case or pouch: protects the phone from falls and scratches.
  • Screen protector: a thin cover that protects the screen from scratches and cracks.
  • Memory card: adds extra storage for photos, music and videos on phones that accept one.
  • Phone holder or stand: holds the phone steady for watching videos or driving.

How do you tell an original accessory from a fake one?

An original accessory is made by a trusted manufacturer to a proper standard, while a fake (counterfeit) one is a poor copy sold as the real thing.

  • Danger of fakes: they can make the phone battery hot, swell up or even catch fire.
  • Safe choice: always buy from trusted shops.
Feature Original accessory Fake / counterfeit
Weight Feels solid and a bit heavy. Feels very light and “empty”.
Printing Text is clear and hard to rub off. Text is blurry or has spelling mistakes.
Fit Plugs in smoothly and stays firm. Feels loose or is hard to push in.
Speed Charges the phone quickly. Charges very slowly or makes the phone hot.

Evaluation

  1. What is the main difference between a Micro-USB and a USB Type-C cable?
  2. Why is it dangerous to listen to music at maximum volume through earphones?
  3. Mention two things you would check to see if a charger is original or fake.
  4. If your phone battery is 4,000 mAh, how many times can a 20,000 mAh power bank charge it?
  5. Name the two parts of a charger.

Assignment

Draw a table with three columns: accessory, one use and one safety rule. Fill it in for earphones, chargers and power banks.

Teacher’s note

  • Show a real power bank: point out the mAh rating on the back so students understand capacity.
  • Answer to question 4: 20,000 ÷ 4,000 = 5 charges in theory. In practice it is a little less because some energy is lost as heat.
