At-Tayammum is a special form of purification in Islam that Muslims can use when water is not available or cannot be used. The word “Tayammum” comes from an Arabic word that means “to aim for” or “to intend.” It is a gift from Allah that allows Muslims to stay pure and continue praying even when water cannot be found or used. In this lesson, we will learn what Tayammum is, when it is allowed, how to perform it correctly, and what things make it invalid.
What is Tayammum?
Definition of Tayammum
Tayammum is the act of using clean earth (soil, sand, dust, or stone) to purify oneself instead of using water for Wudu (ablution) or Ghusl (full body wash). It involves wiping the face and hands with clean earth with the intention of purification.
Proof from the Quran
Allah mentions Tayammum in the Quran:
“And if you are ill or on a journey or one of you comes from the place of relieving himself or you have contacted women and do not find water, then seek clean earth and wipe over your faces and hands with it. Indeed, Allah is ever Pardoning and Forgiving.” (Quran 4:43)
Proof from the Sunnah
Many hadith (sayings and actions of Prophet Muhammad) talk about Tayammum:
- The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “The earth has been made for me as a place of prayer and a means of purification.” (Bukhari and Muslim)
- Ammar ibn Yasir reported that the Prophet taught him to perform Tayammum by striking the earth once and wiping the face and hands up to the wrists. (Bukhari and Muslim)
When is Tayammum Allowed?
Absence of Water
Tayammum is permitted when water cannot be found:
- After searching for water in the surrounding area
- When traveling and no water is available
- When camped far from water sources
Inability to Use Available Water
Even when water is available, Tayammum is allowed if:
- Medical Reasons:
- When using water may worsen an illness
- When water might delay healing of wounds or burns
- When a doctor has advised against using water
- When a person has a condition that makes using water harmful
- Extreme Cold:
- When water is extremely cold and cannot be heated
- When using cold water might cause illness
- Limited Water Supply:
- When the available water is needed for drinking or cooking
- When there is just enough water for basic needs
- Physical Inability:
- When a person cannot use water due to physical limitations
- When no one is available to help a disabled person use water
Fear of Harm
Tayammum is allowed when using water might cause harm:
- Extreme cold that could cause illness
- Fear of dangerous animals or enemies near the water source
- Risk of falling into a dangerous area while getting water
Materials for Tayammum
Valid Materials
Tayammum can be performed using:
- Clean soil or earth
- Sand
- Dust
- Stone or rock
- Clay
- Walls made of earth or stone
- Any natural ground surface that has dust on it
Invalid Materials
Tayammum is not valid if performed with:
- Metals like gold, silver, or copper
- Wood or plant materials
- Cloth or paper
- Glass or plastic
- Food items
- Anything that burns to ash (like coal)
- Highly polished surfaces with no dust
The Material Must Be:
- Clean (not containing impurities)
- Natural (not processed or manufactured)
- Having some dust that sticks to the hands when touched
- Not previously used for Tayammum
How to Perform Tayammum
The Intention (Niyyah)
Before starting Tayammum, a person must make the intention in their heart to perform Tayammum for purification. The intention doesn’t need to be spoken out loud.
Step-by-Step Method
- Say “Bismillah” (In the name of Allah)
- Strike the Earth:
- Place both palms on clean earth, sand, or dust
- Strike lightly once (according to most scholars)
- Some scholars say it’s two strikes: one for the face and one for the hands
- Wipe the Face:
- Blow gently on your hands to remove excess dust
- Wipe the entire face with the palms of your hands
- Make sure to cover the whole face from forehead to chin and ear to ear
- Wipe the Hands:
- Wipe the right hand with the left hand
- Start from the fingertips and go up to the wrist
- Wipe between the fingers
- Then wipe the left hand with the right hand in the same way
- Complete the Tayammum:
- There are no specific prayers that must be said after Tayammum
- However, it is good to say the same dua (supplication) that is said after Wudu
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Not making the proper intention
- Not covering the entire face when wiping
- Not wiping between the fingers
- Using too much force when striking the earth
- Using invalid materials
- Performing Tayammum before the prayer time has started (according to some scholars)
What Makes Tayammum Invalid?
Same Things That Break Wudu
Anything that breaks Wudu also breaks Tayammum:
- Passing gas
- Using the toilet (urinating or defecating)
- Deep sleep
- Unconsciousness
- Touching the private parts directly
- Bleeding or vomiting (according to some scholars)
Finding Water
If a person performed Tayammum due to lack of water, their Tayammum becomes invalid when:
- They find water before or during prayer
- They become able to use water that was previously unavailable
End of the Excuse
If a person performed Tayammum due to illness or injury, their Tayammum becomes invalid when:
- They recover from the illness
- Their wounds heal
- The extreme cold passes
- Any other excuse for not using water no longer exists
One Prayer Per Tayammum
According to some scholars, Tayammum is only valid for one obligatory prayer, and a new Tayammum must be performed for each prayer. Other scholars say that Tayammum remains valid for multiple prayers until it is broken by one of the factors mentioned above.
Differences Between Tayammum and Wudu
Similarities
- Both require intention (niyyah)
- Both are forms of purification
- Both allow a person to pray and read the Quran
- Both have conditions that make them invalid
Differences
- Wudu uses water; Tayammum uses earth
- Wudu involves washing; Tayammum involves wiping
- Wudu is the original form of purification; Tayammum is a substitute
- Wudu does not become invalid when water is found; Tayammum does
- According to some scholars, Tayammum may need to be repeated for each prayer
Special Cases and Rulings
Combining Reasons for Tayammum
If a person has multiple reasons for performing Tayammum (like lack of water and illness), the Tayammum remains valid until all reasons no longer exist.
Having Bandages or Casts
If part of the body that needs to be washed in Wudu is covered by a bandage or cast:
- The person should perform Wudu normally for the uncovered parts
- Then wipe over the bandage or cast
- If wiping over the bandage might cause harm, Tayammum can be used for that part
Traveling
While traveling, a person should:
- Look for water at each stop
- Ask companions if they have water
- Check for signs of water (green plants, bird gatherings)
- Perform Tayammum only after reasonable search
For Different Types of Impurity
- For minor impurity (requiring Wudu), Tayammum can substitute
- For major impurity (requiring Ghusl), Tayammum can also substitute
- The method is the same for both cases
Benefits and Wisdom of Tayammum
Ease and Mercy from Allah
Tayammum shows Allah’s mercy by:
- Providing an alternative when water cannot be used
- Making sure illness and hardship don’t prevent worship
- Removing difficulty from religious practice
Continuous Worship
Tayammum ensures that Muslims can:
- Continue to pray on time
- Maintain their connection with Allah even in difficult circumstances
- Not miss acts of worship due to lack of water
Practical Benefits
- Conserves water in areas where it is scarce
- Protects health when using water might cause harm
- Teaches the importance of both physical and spiritual cleanliness
Environmental Awareness
Tayammum teaches Muslims to:
- Respect and connect with the earth
- Be aware of natural resources and their limits
- Adapt to different environments while maintaining worship
Conclusion
Tayammum is a beautiful example of how Islam combines spiritual worship with practical solutions. It shows that Allah wants ease for His servants and does not want to place hardship on them. Through Tayammum, Muslims learn that the most important aspect of worship is the intention and effort to obey Allah, not just the physical form of purification.
When water is not available or cannot be used, Tayammum becomes a valid substitute that allows Muslims to maintain their state of purity for prayer and other acts of worship. By striking clean earth and wiping the face and hands, a Muslim fulfills the requirement of purification and can proceed to pray, read Quran, and perform other acts of worship that require a state of purity.
The gift of Tayammum reminds us that Allah is Merciful and does not burden a soul beyond what it can bear. It teaches us flexibility, adaptability, and the importance of maintaining our worship in all circumstances.
