WEEK 10: BY-PRODUCTS OF CRUDE OIL AND THEIR USES

What are By-products? By-products are useful materials created during the refining process of crude oil. When crude oil is processed in refineries, it is separated into many different products, each with specific uses.

Major By-products of Crude Oil:

  1. MOTOR GASOLINE (PETROL) Uses:
  • Vehicles: Cars, motorcycles, small generators
  • Aviation: Small aircraft fuel
  • Industrial: Solvent for cleaning and manufacturing
  • Household: Fuel for small engines (lawn mowers, chainsaws)

Characteristics:

  • Highly Refined: Clean-burning fuel
  • Octane Rating: Different grades (91, 95 octane)
  • Most Common: Widely used petroleum product
  1. DIESEL FUEL Uses:
