Notable Early Heroines in Nigeria

  1. Mrs. Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti (1900-1978)

  • From: Abeokuta (Yorubaland)
  • Called: “Lioness of Lisabi”
  • What she did:
    1. Led women to fight against unfair taxes
    2. Started women’s groups to help women
    3. Fought for women’s rights and voting
    4. Traveled around the world speaking for African women
  1. Mrs. Margaret Ekpo (1914-2006)

  • From: Calabar (Eastern Nigeria)
  • What she did:
    1. First woman elected to Parliament in Eastern Nigeria
    2. Started many women’s organizations
    3. Promoted girls’ education
    4. Fought for Nigeria’s independence
  1. Queen Amina (1533-1610)

  • From: Zaria (Hausaland)
  • Called: “Warrior Queen”
  • What she did:
    1. Led armies and won many battles
    2. Ruled Zazzau kingdom for 34 years
    3. Built walls around cities for protection
    4. Made her kingdom very strong and wealthy
  1. Queen Idia (Early 1500s)

  • From: Benin Kingdom
  • What she did:
    1. Advised the king with her wisdom
    2. Helped make Benin Kingdom stronger
    3. Supported arts and culture
    4. Her face is on famous Benin ivory masks

 

Forms of Heroism

Military Heroism (Queen Amina):

  • Led soldiers into battles personally
  • Never lost a war in 34 years of fighting
  • Built strong walls to protect her people
  • Expanded her kingdom by winning territories

Political Heroism (Mrs. Margaret Ekpo & Queen Idia):

  • Mrs. Ekpo: First woman in Parliament, fought for independence
  • Queen Idia: Gave wise advice to help rule the kingdom
  • Both helped make good laws and decisions

Social Heroism (Mrs. Ransome-Kuti):

  • Organized women to demand their rights
  • Led protests against unfair treatment
  • Started women’s groups that still exist today
  • Fought for women’s education and voting rights

Cultural Heroism (Queen Idia):

  • Promoted Benin arts and beautiful crafts
  • Preserved traditions and customs
  • Supported artists and craftsmen
  • Famous ivory masks show her importance

Queen Amina:

  • Born a princess in Zaria
  • Learned warfare and horse riding as a young girl
  • Became queen when she was 16 years old
  • Ruled wisely for 34 years

Queen Idia:

  • Married into the royal family of Benin
  • Learned court ways and royal duties
  • Became Queen Mother when her son became king
  • Used her wisdom to help rule the kingdom

Mrs. Ransome-Kuti:

  • Born into educated family in Abeokuta
  • Became a teacher after going to school

Mrs. Margaret Ekpo:

  • Joined women’s groups in her area
