THE HOLY SPIRIT INSPIRES US (ACTS 2: 37-42)
The Holy Spirit is believed by Christians to be a divine presence that empowers and guides believers as seen in the New Testament book of Acts, Chapter 2, verses 37-42. The early church is described as being filled with the Holy Spirit and speaking boldly and fearlessly in the face of opposition. This passage shows how the Holy Spirit inspired the early Christians to live in unity, share their belongings, and spread the message of the gospel and to face challenges with courage and faith.
MEANING OF INSPIRATION
To inspire means to encourage someone by making him or her feel confident and eager to do something. It is to give confidence to someone who is doubtful or shy to do something great. Doing the right and courageous thing, the apostles were afraid of preaching the gospel. The Holy Spirit and gave them courage and faith.
Inspiration refers to the process of being stimulated or influenced to produce something creative or to act in a certain way. Inspiration can come from a variety of sources, including personal experiences, other people, nature, art or spirituality.
Here are some examples of inspiration:
- A musician who is inspired by a beautiful sunset to write a new song
- An author who is inspired by a life-changing experience to write a novel
- An artist who is inspired by a dream to create a painting
- A person who is inspired by a motivational speaker to make positive changes in their life
- A community activist who is inspired by a personal experience of injustice to fight for change
In all these examples, inspiration acts as a catalyst for creativity and action, leading individuals to produce new and meaningful works or to make changes in their lives. Inspiration is a powerful force that can fuel personal transformation and societal progress.
INSPIRATION MAKES US CONFIDENT
Inspiration makes the person given to someone to make him confident to do great things. When Jesus was crucified his disciples were afraid to go out because of the fear that they might be killed also. But when the Holy Spirit came upon them on the day of Pentecost, they were able to preach boldly as recorded in the Bible.
For example, Peter denied Jesus three times. But after the resurrection of Jesus, when the Holy Spirit came upon the disciples at Pentecost, Peter was bold to preach the gospel and three thousand souls were saved. Other disciples who fled and deserted their master in the hour of trial became bold to preach.
The story of Peter and John
Peter and John healed a cripple with the power of the Holy Spirit. They were arrested and put in prison. When they were asked by what power or by what name did you do this, Peter was filled with the Holy Spirit (he replied from that the cripple was healed by the name of Jesus. The people saw the boldness of Peter and John, and they perceived that they were unlearned and ignorant men, they marveled; and they took knowledge of them, that they had been with Jesus. And beholding the man which was healed standing with them, they could say nothing against it to oppose. The place where they prayed shook and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit.
The story of Philip
Philip went to Samaria to preach the gospel. Many Samaritans heard him and great joy came to the city. The Holy Spirit told him to a desert road from Jerusalem to Gaza where he met an Ethiopian eunuch. The man was reading from the book of Isaiah in his chariot but could not understand it. The Holy Spirit directed Philip to approach the man and Philip asked if he understood. The man said “How can I unless someone guides me?” Philip then explained the gospel to him and baptized him. So we can see that the Holy Spirit led Philip to meet the eunuch, and through their meeting faith in Isaiah was added as it was stated. As a result led to his daughter, as a result before he had the Gospel, now he opened not his mouth. And Philip answered and preached Jesus to him from this scripture. The eunuch believed and he was baptized.
Philip and the Ethiopian eunuch
The Ethiopian eunuch asked Philip, “About whom, I pray, does the prophets say this, about himself or about someone else?” Philip was inspired by the Spirit to explain that the prophet Isaiah was talking about the resurrection of Jesus from he believed and accepted Jesus as savior. When they got to a lake the man asked Philip to be baptized and Philip baptized him and after that, the Holy Spirit took Philip away to preach elsewhere.
