The British System (Top to Bottom):

1. Governor-General (Top Leader)

• Most powerful person in Nigeria
• Represented the British King/Queen
• Made all important decisions

2. Lieutenant Governors

• Helped the Governor-General
• Controlled Northern and Southern Nigeria

3. Residents

• British officers in each province
• Supervised local areas

4. District Officers

• Managed smaller districts
• Worked directly with local people

5. Native Authorities

• Local traditional rulers (Emirs, Obas, Obi)
• Helped British rule their people
• Collected taxes for the British

How Nigeria Was Colonized by Britain

Step by Step:

1. Trade Period (1800s)

• British traders came to buy palm oil and other goods
• They built trading posts along the coast

2. Taking Control (1860s-1900)

• British took over Lagos in 1861
• Royal Niger Company controlled trade in the North
• British made treaties with local rulers

3. Military Conquest (1900-1914)

• British used their army to defeat resistant communities
• Created Northern and Southern Nigeria protectorates
• Forced traditional rulers to obey British laws

4. Amalgamation (1914)
