What is Theft?

Theft means taking things that belong to other people without their permission. It is stealing and it is a crime that hurts people and gets you in serious trouble.

Types of Theft to Avoid

Taking Things from School

  • Stealing classmates’ pens, books, or toys
  • Taking food from other children’s lunch boxes
  • Removing items from the teacher’s desk
  • Taking school supplies or equipment

Taking Things from Home

  • Taking money from parents without asking
  • Stealing food or snacks without permission
  • Taking siblings’ belongings secretly
  • Removing items from family members

Taking Things from Shops

  • Putting items in your pocket without paying
  • Taking sweets or small things from stores
  • Hiding merchandise to take without buying
  • Taking things when shop owners aren’t looking

Taking Things from Neighbors

  • Picking fruits from neighbors’ trees without asking
  • Taking toys left outside other people’s houses
  • Stealing clothes from washing lines
  • Taking any items from neighbors’ property

Why Theft is Wrong

It Hurts People

How to Avoid Theft

Develop Good Values

  • Be happy with what you have
  • Don’t be jealous of other people’s things
  • Appreciate gifts and belongings given to you

Respect Others’ Property:

  • Ask before borrowing anything
  • Take good care of things you borrow
  • Return borrowed items in good condition

Consequences of Theft

Immediate Consequences

  • Having to return stolen items
  • Feeling guilty and ashamed

Long-term Consequences

  • Developing a reputation as a thief
  • Losing friends and trust

How to Make Amends if You’ve Stolen

Admit Your Mistake

  • Tell the truth about what you did
  • Don’t make excuses or blame others
  • Accept responsibility for your actions
  • Show genuine regret for hurting someone

Return What You Took

  • Give back stolen items immediately
  • Replace things that are damaged or lost
  • Pay for items that cannot be returned
