What is Anti-Social Behavior?

Anti-social behavior (ASB) means actions that hurt or disturb other people in the community. It is behavior that goes against what society expects and makes others feel unsafe or uncomfortable.

Types of Anti-Social Behavior

Aggressive Behavior

What is Aggressive Behavior?

• Acting in a mean, angry, or hostile way toward others
• Using force or threats to get what you want
• Being violent or rough with people

Examples of Aggressive Behavior:

• Shouting and screaming at people
• Pushing, hitting, or fighting others
• Threatening to hurt someone
• Breaking things when angry
• Bullying smaller or weaker people
• Using harsh words to hurt others’ feelings

How it Affects Others:

• Makes people feel scared and unsafe
• Hurts people physically and emotionally
• Creates a tense and uncomfortable environment
• Breaks friendships and relationships

Violence

What is Violence?

• Using physical force to hurt people or damage property
• Any action that causes harm to others

Examples of Violence:

• Hitting, kicking, or punching people
• Using weapons to hurt others
• Destroying other people’s belongings
• Fighting in schools or public places
• Throwing objects at people
• Hurting animals

Consequences of Violence:

• People get injured and hurt
• Property gets damaged or destroyed
• Communities become unsafe
• Police may arrest violent people
• Families and friendships are broken

Racism

What is Racism?

• Treating people badly because of their skin color, tribe, or ethnic group
• Believing that some races are better than others
• Discriminating against people because they look different

Examples of Racism:

• Calling people bad names because of their tribe
• Refusing to play with children from other ethnic groups
• Saying mean things about people’s skin color
• Not allowing people to join activities because of their race
• Making fun of people’s culture or traditions
• Treating people unfairly because they are different

Why Racism is Wrong:

• All people are equal regardless of color or tribe
• Everyone deserves respect and fair treatment
• Racism hurts people’s feelings deeply
• It creates division and hatred in communities
• Nigeria has many tribes that should live together peacefully

Other Examples of Anti-Social Behavior

Disrespectful Behavior

• Not greeting elders properly
• Talking back rudely to adults
• Ignoring people when they speak to you
• Not saying “please” and “thank you”

Destructive Behavior

• Writing on walls and buildings
• Breaking streetlights or signs
• Littering and making places dirty
• Damaging school or public property

Disturbing Behavior

• Making too much noise in public
• Playing loud music late at night
• Running around in places where you should be quiet
• Interrupting people when they’re talking

Why People Show Anti-Social Behavior

Personal Reasons

• Feeling angry or frustrated
• Not learning proper behavior at home
• Having problems with emotions
• Copying bad examples they see

Social Reasons

• Being influenced by bad friends
• Living in environments where such behavior is common
• Not understanding the effect on others
• Seeking attention in wrong ways

Effects of Anti-Social Behavior

On Individuals

• People feel hurt and sad
• Trust between people is broken
• Fear and anxiety increase
• Self-esteem is damaged

On Communities

• Neighborhoods become unsafe
• People don’t want to live in such areas
• Children learn bad behavior
• Peace and harmony are destroyed

• National unity is weakened

How to Prevent Anti-Social Behavior

Learn Good Values

• Practice respect for all people
• Learn to control your anger
• Understand that all tribes and races are equal
• Develop kindness and compassion

Choose Good Role Models

• Copy adults who behave well
• Learn from people who treat others fairly
• Follow leaders who promote peace
• Avoid imitating aggressive people

Practice Good Communication

• Learn to express anger in proper ways
• Talk about problems instead of fighting
• Listen to others when they speak
• Use polite words and gestures

Get Help When Needed

• Tell adults when you feel very angry
• Ask for help if you have problems with others
• Seek counseling if you can’t control your behavior
• Report when others show anti-social behavior
