Long /a:/ Sound (like “ah”):

park – /p-a:-k/
hard – /h-a:-d/
car – /k-a:/
far – /f-a:/

Short /a/ Sound (like “a” in cat):

cap – /k-a-p/
fan – /f-a-n/
bag – /b-a-g/
cat – /k-a-t/

Exercise: Circle the words with long /a:/ sound: park – cap – car – fan – hard – bag

Exercise: Say these words aloud:

park (long sound)
cap (short sound)
far (long sound)
fan (short sound)
