DRUG TRAFFICKING

Drug trafficking means the production, distribution, and sale of illegal drugs within or outside a country. 

In Nigeria,  a special agency exists for the main purpose of discouraging drug trafficking activities in Nigeria. It is called “National Drug Law Enforcement Agency(NDLEA)”.

 REASONS FOR DRUG TRAFFICKING

1. POVERTY: The poverty level has forced many people or unemployed youths to engage in drug trafficking within and outside Nigeria 
2. IGNORANCE: The majority of the people involved in drug trafficking do not know the harm it would cause to them. 
3. GREED OR GET RICH QUICK: A strong desire to acquire money may force many Nigerians to engage in drug trafficking. 
4. PEER INFLUENCE: Some people are drug traffickers through the influence of their friends. 
5. PEOPLE IN SPORTS ACTIVITIES: People in sports buy drugs to enhance their strength and for speedy performances

   CONSEQUENCES OF DRUG TRAFFICKING

   Drug trafficking has various consequences such as: 

   1. Drug trafficking causes a lot of harm, so many countries have harsh rules against offenders for example; in countries like Saudi Arabia and Singapore, drug traffickers are killed when they are caught. Offenders are not sent to jail, fines are not imposed on those found guilty instead they are killed. 
   2. In other countries drug traffickers are jailed for life 
   3. Drug traffickers bring shame to themselves, their families, and their countries.
   4. The properties of drug traffickers will be seized and forfeited to the state
   5. Imprisonment, death 

   PREVENTION OF DRUG TRAFFICKING

   Drug trafficking can be prevented in the following ways; 

   1. People should be educated on the dangers of drug trafficking. 
   2. Poverty alleviation program must be initiated 
   3. There should be serious punishment for drug traffickers 
   4. Agencies like the National Drug Law Enforcement Agencies (NDLEA) and the National Agency for Food Drug Administration Control (NAFDAC) should be equipped and given more power to control and prevent drug abuse and drug trafficking effectively.
   5. All Nations must cooperate and arrest drug traffickers.
