Topic: Grammar, Vocabulary Development – Nouns & Gender

NOUNS AND GENDER

Gender is the state of being male or female in social and cultural roles.

There are four groups of gender and they are:

  1. Masculine Gender: This is for the male e.g boy, man uncle, nephew
  2. Feminine Gender: This is used for the female e.g female, sister, girl, mother, niece
  3. Common Gender: This is for either male or female e.g baby, infant, guardian, pupil
  4. Neutral Gender: This is for things without life e.g house, book, table, bag etc

VOCABULARY DEVELOPMENT: WORDS ASSOCIATED WITH FAMILY LIFE 

  1. Half-brother: a boy or man who has the same mother or father as one half (also half-sister).
  2. Grandchild: The child of one’s son or daughter.
  3. Cousin: The child of one’s uncle or aunt
  4. Uncle: The brother of one’s mother or father or husband of one’s aunt.
  5. Aunt: Sister of one’s mother or father or wife of one’s uncl
  6. Nephew: The son of one’s sister or brother.
  7. Step Mother: Woman who marries one’s father (also stepfather)
  8. Relative: a member of the same family or extended family as oneself
  9. Family: a group of people consisting of parents and their children
  10. Extended family: a group of people consisting of parents and their children and such other people as one’s aunts, uncles, cousins, and grandparents.
  11. Distant relative: Relatives such as one’s cousin’s child.
  12. Nuclear family: Family consisting only of parents and their children and not including aunts, uncles, cousins,etc.
