Slide transitions and animations are visual effects that make a presentation move, and a slide show is the full-screen way of presenting it to an audience.
Behavioural objectives
- Define a slide transition and an animation.
- Add a transition to slides and an animation to an object.
- Save a presentation using Save As and Ctrl + S.
- Start, move through and end a slide show using the keyboard and mouse.
- State the difference between a transition and an animation.
What is a slide transition?
A slide transition is the visual effect that plays when you move from one slide to the next.
- Everyday example: the way one scene fades into the next in a film.
- Simple picture: it works like a doorway between two slides.
- Where it works: it affects the whole slide, not single items.
Examples of transition effects
- Fade: the old slide slowly changes into the new slide.
- Push: the new slide pushes the old slide off the screen.
- Wipe: the new slide is uncovered from one side, like a wiper clearing glass.
How do you add a transition?
- Click the slide you want to add the transition to, in the slide list on the left.
- Click the Transitions tab at the top of the screen.
- Choose an effect such as Fade, Push or Wipe.
- Click Preview to see how it looks.
- Click Apply To All if you want every slide to use the same transition.
Good habits for transitions
- Keep it simple: too many different transitions can make the audience feel dizzy.
- Stay consistent: pick one nice transition and use it for all your slides.
What is an animation in presentation software?
An animation is a special visual effect added to an individual item inside a slide.
- Items that can be animated: a single word, a bulleted list, a text box or a picture.
- Example: make a title “fly in” from the bottom, or make a picture “spin”.
What are the kinds of animation effects?
There are three common kinds of animation effect: entrance, emphasis and exit.
- Entrance: controls how an item appears on the slide. Its icons are green.
- Emphasis: draws attention to an item already on the slide. Its icons are yellow.
- Exit: controls how an item leaves the slide. Its icons are red.
How do you add an animation?
- Click the text box or picture you want to animate.
- Click the Animations tab.
- Pick an effect. Green icons are Entrance effects.
- Look at the small numbers (1, 2, 3) beside your items. They show the order in which the items will move.
- Click Preview to check the effect.
What is the difference between a transition and an animation?
A transition acts on a whole slide as it changes, while an animation acts on one item inside a slide.
| Point | Transition | Animation |
|---|---|---|
| Acts on | The whole slide | One item on a slide |
| Happens | Between two slides | Inside one slide |
| Tab used | Transitions | Animations |
| Examples | Fade, Push, Wipe | Fly In, Spin |
How do you save a presentation?
Saving stores your presentation in a folder so that your work is not lost.
- Why it matters: if the power goes off before you save, all your work on the slides and effects is lost.
Steps to save with Save As
- Click the File tab.
- Click Save As.
- Choose your folder, such as Documents or a flash drive.
- Type a name you can remember, for example My_Solar_System_Project.
- Click Save.
How do you save quickly while you work?
- Shortcut: press Ctrl + S on the keyboard.
- Habit: save every time you finish a slide.
What is a slide show?
A slide show is the full-screen display of your presentation, used to show it to an audience.
- Purpose: the slides fill the whole screen so everyone can see them clearly.
- Effects: transitions and animations play only in slide show view.
How do you start a slide show?
- From the beginning: press the F5 key at the top of the keyboard.
- From the current slide: click the small “Slide Show” icon at the bottom right of the screen. It looks like a tiny projector screen.
- Keyboard option for the current slide: press Shift + F5.
How do you move during a slide show?
| Action | What to press |
|---|---|
| Next slide | Right Arrow key, Spacebar or a mouse click |
| Previous slide | Left Arrow key |
| End the show early | Esc (Escape) key |
