Subject: Digital Technologies
Topic: Digital Literacy
What is digital literacy?
Digital literacy is the ability to find, evaluate and communicate information using digital platforms.
- Not just button pressing: playing a game or watching a video is only the start.
- Thinking while you use technology: a digitally literate person asks questions about what they see and do online.
- Like English literacy: reading the alphabet is the start, but reading a book and explaining the story is true literacy.
What does a digitally literate person know?
- Devices: how to use a computer or smartphone.
- Safe searching: how to find answers on the internet safely.
- Real and fake news: which information is true and which is “fake news”.
- Netiquette: how to behave politely to others online.
Behavioural objectives
By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:
- Define digital literacy.
- State the skills a digitally literate person has.
- Explain the importance of digital literacy in school, work and daily life.
- List safe habits to follow online.
Why is digital literacy important in school?
Digital literacy helps a JSS 1 student learn better and faster.
- Access to information: search engines such as Google explain difficult maths or history topics when the textbook does not.
- Online learning: platforms like Google Classroom and educational animations let you learn from teachers far away.
- Better projects: word processors and presentation tools make assignments neat and professional.
- Collaboration: classmates can work on a group project through shared folders, even from their own homes.
Why is digital literacy important in work and careers?
Digital literacy is important at work because almost every job in the future will require it.
- In offices: workers send professional emails, manage digital files and attend video meetings with people in other countries.
- In business: shop owners advertise goods on social media and track money using spreadsheets.
- In creative jobs: artists, architects and fashion designers use digital tools to draw and design products before they are made.
- Employable: a person with the skills to handle modern tools has a better chance of getting a good job.
Why is digital literacy important in daily life?
Digital literacy makes everyday life easier and safer.
- Connecting with family: video calls and text messages keep us in touch with relatives and parents.
- Managing money: banking apps are used to pay for electricity or buy airtime. Keep your passwords secret.
- Staying safe online: this is the most important part, as shown below.
What are the safe habits online?
- Protect personal details: do not share your home address with strangers online.
- Avoid suspicious links: do not click links that promise “Free Gifts”.
- Use strong passwords: they keep hackers away from your accounts.
Evaluation
- Define digital literacy.
- Mention two ways digital literacy can help you study for your next exam.
- Why is it dangerous to believe everything you read on the internet?
- State two ways digital literacy is used in business.
- List three safe habits to follow online.
Assignment
Write down three ways you or your family use digital tools every day. For each one, state one safety rule that should be followed.
