What are consonant sounds?
Consonant sounds are speech sounds that we show with phonetic symbols such as /p/, /b/ and /t/. This note introduces twelve of them, from /p/ to /z/. Each sound is matched with example words in which it occurs at the beginning, middle or end of the word.
Behavioural objectives
By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:
- recognise the consonant sounds /p/, /b/, /t/, /d/, /k/, /g/, /tʃ/, /dʒ/, /f/, /v/, /s/ and /z/;
- give example words that contain each of these sounds;
- identify words in which the letter p is not pronounced.
