Topic: Learning to Play with Balls

What are Ball Games?

Ball games are fun activities we play using different types of balls. They help us exercise, have fun, and play with friends.

Types of Balls We Can Use

Safe Balls for Primary 1:

  • Soft foam balls

  • Large playground balls

  • Beach balls

  • Tennis balls (with adult supervision)

  • Bean bags (not exactly balls but similar)

Basic Ball Skills

Rolling the Ball:

  • Sit on the floor with legs open wide
  • Roll the ball gently to your partner
  • Partner catches and rolls it back
  • Try to roll in a straight line

Bouncing the Ball:

  • Hold a big ball with both hands
  • Drop it and let it bounce once
  • Catch it when it comes back up
  • Try to bounce and catch 3 times

Throwing Underhand:

  • Hold the ball with both hands
  • Swing your arms from low to high
  • Let go when arms go up
  • Ball should go high and gentle

Simple Ball Games

Roll and Stop:

  • One child rolls ball across the room
  • Other child tries to stop it with hands
  • Take turns rolling and stopping
  • See who can stop the ball best

Bounce and Catch:

  • Stand in a circle with friends
  • One person bounces ball in the middle
  • Everyone tries to catch it when it bounces up
  • Person who catches gets next turn

Pass the Ball Around:

  • Sit in a circle on the floor
  • Pass the ball to the person next to you
  • Keep passing around the circle
  • Try not to drop the ball

Ball Game Safety

Safety Rules:

  • Use soft balls only
  • Don’t throw balls at people’s faces
  • Play in open spaces
  • Pick up balls when finished playing

How to Hold Balls:

  • Use both hands for big balls
  • Hold gently, don’t squeeze hard
  • Keep balls away from your face when catching
  • Ask for help if ball goes too high

Fun Ball Activities

Musical Balls:

  • Pass ball around while music plays
  • When music stops, person with ball sits down
  • Start music again with remaining children
  • Continue until one person left

Ball Relay:

  • Make two lines of children
  • First child runs with ball to marker and back
  • Give ball to next child in line
  • First team to finish wins

Target Practice:

  • Place a box or basket on floor
  • Try to roll balls into the target
  • Start close, then move further away
  • Count how many balls go in

Class Exercise

  1. Show me how to roll a ball properly.
  2. How should we hold a big ball?
  3. What type of balls are safe for us to use?
  4. Demonstrate bouncing and catching a ball 2 times.

Ball Game Practice Time

Today’s Activities:

  • Practice rolling balls to partners
  • Try bouncing and catching in pairs
  • Play one round of “Roll and Stop”
  • End with passing ball in circle

Remember:

  • Be gentle with the equipment
  • Take turns fairly
  • Help friends who need practice
  • Have fun and encourage each other
