Topic: ICT in Livestock Farming

The “Digital Shepherd”

When we think of ICT (Information and Communication Technology), we usually think of computers and the internet. But in agriculture, ICT is the “brain” of the farm.

In the past, a farmer had to guess if an animal was sick or if the soil was dry. Today, we use Digital Tools to know exactly what is happening in real-time. This is called Precision Livestock Farming (PLF)—farming with high accuracy so that every animal gets exactly what it needs.

 

Digital Tools on the Farm

These are the “gadgets” that help us monitor our animals:

  • Smart Tags & Collars (Wearables): Just like humans wear fitness trackers, animals can wear collars with RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) tags. These tell the farmer where the animal is and even if it is moving less than usual (which might mean it is sick).
  • Sensors: These are tiny devices placed in the pens. They measure:
    1. Temperature: Are the chickens too hot?
    2. Humidity: Is the air too damp?
    3. Ammonia Levels: Is the air dirty from too much animal waste?
  • CCTV Cameras: Farmers can now watch their animals from their phones while sitting in the house. This helps spot a cow giving birth or a predator trying to enter the pen at night.
  • Drones: On very large ranches, drones are used to fly over the land to count cattle or check for broken fences.

 

Digital Record Systems

If you don’t have records, you are just “keeping pets,” not running a business. Digital record-keeping has replaced the old, dusty notebooks that often get lost or wet.

  • Farm Management Apps: There are many mobile apps where a farmer can quickly type in:
    1. When an animal was vaccinated.
    2. How many eggs were collected today.
    3. How much was spent on feed this week.
  • The “Auto-Math” Advantage: Unlike a notebook, these apps automatically calculate your profit and loss. They can even send a “reminder” to your phone when it’s time for the next round of vaccinations.
  • Cloud Storage: Your records are saved on the internet (the cloud). Even if your phone falls into a bucket of water, your farm data is safe and can be accessed from a new device.

 

Precision Livestock Farming (PLF)

Precision farming means being exact. Instead of feeding all 1,000 chickens the same way, we use technology to treat them almost like individuals.

  • Automated Feeding: Some systems can identify a specific cow by her ear tag and give her a special mix of vitamins because the computer knows she is pregnant.
  • Early Disease Detection: Computers can listen to the “sounds” in a pig pen. If the machine hears a specific type of coughing, it alerts the farmer that a respiratory disease is starting—often days before a human would notice.
  • Smart Milking: Modern milking machines track how many liters each cow gives. If a cow’s milk production suddenly drops by 10%, the computer flags her for a health check immediately.

 

Why ICT is a Game-Changer for Nigeria

  • Attracting Youth: Young people who love technology are finding that farming is now “cool” and high-tech.
  • Efficiency: In a time when feed and fuel are expensive, ICT helps us avoid waste. We only use what is necessary.
  • Traceability: International buyers (Export) want to know the history of the meat. Digital records provide a “digital passport” for every animal.
