Global citizenship is understanding that you are part of a global community as well as a national one, seeing yourself as connected to people everywhere, and taking responsibility for global wellbeing. A global citizen understands global issues, respects diverse cultures and acts on global problems while staying committed to Nigeria’s development.
Behavioural objectives
By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:
- define global citizenship and describe what a global citizen does;
- describe the ways in which the world is connected;
- explain why Nigeria’s future depends on global engagement;
- state what global citizenship requires and how to be an active global citizen;
- identify the challenges of global engagement and ways to overcome them.
What is global citizenship?
You watch American movies. You listen to music from Kenya. You might study with classmates from Ghana online. You follow global news. You know about climate change affecting the whole world. This is the globalised world you live in.
Global citizenship is understanding that you are part of a global community, not just a national one. It is seeing yourself as connected to people everywhere. It is taking responsibility for global wellbeing, not just national or personal wellbeing.
A global citizen:
- understands global issues
- cares about people beyond their borders
- takes action on global problems
- respects diverse cultures
- participates in global conversations
- works toward global solutions
You are already part of a globalised world. Will you be a conscious, active global citizen?
How is the world connected?
The world is more connected than ever. What happens anywhere affects everywhere.
Economically connected
Money flows across borders. A business in Nigeria might have investors from America. A Nigerian might work for a company in India. Trade connects nations.
When the world economy struggles, Nigeria feels it. When Nigeria develops, the world benefits.
Technologically connected
You have the internet. You can communicate instantly with someone in another country. You can learn from universities worldwide. You can collaborate on projects globally. Technology erases distance.
Culturally connected
Music, food, fashion and ideas flow globally. Nigerian music influences the world. Global culture influences Nigeria. We are learning from each other constantly.
Environmentally connected
Pollution in one place affects the whole world. Climate change knows no borders. Environmental problems are global. Your country’s environment depends on global environmental health.
Socially connected
Through social media, you know what is happening globally immediately. When there is injustice somewhere, people everywhere know. Global movements unite people worldwide.
Politically connected
International organisations, treaties and relations affect national policies. Nigeria’s international relationships matter for our development.
What is Nigeria’s position in the global world?
Nigeria is not isolated. We are part of the global system.
Africa’s giant
Nigeria is Africa’s largest economy. We are Africa’s most populous country. What happens in Nigeria affects Africa. African nations look to us for leadership.
Regional leader
West Africa looks to Nigeria. ECOWAS centres around Nigeria. Our stability or instability affects the region.
Global player
Nigeria participates in the UN, international trade and global conversations. We have a voice globally.
Resource producer
Nigeria produces oil, which the world needs. We have agricultural products. We have human resources. The world depends on Nigeria for resources.
Cultural exporter
Nigerian music, movies and culture reach the world. Afrobeats is global. Nollywood is watched worldwide. Nigeria’s culture influences global culture.
Problem solver
Nigeria contributes to global solutions. We send peacekeepers. We participate in climate action. We contribute to fighting global poverty.
Why does Nigeria’s future depend on global engagement?
Nigeria’s future is not isolated from the world. The outcome depends on how well Nigeria engages globally.
| If Nigeria engages globally well | If Nigeria isolates or engages poorly |
|---|---|
| We attract investment | We lose investment |
| We have trading partners | We have limited trading partners |
| We access global knowledge | We fall behind technologically |
| We influence global decisions | We have no influence |
| We solve problems with international support | We struggle alone with problems |
Active global engagement is essential for Nigeria’s future.
What does global citizenship require?
Understanding global issues
Climate change, poverty, disease, inequality, terrorism and migration affect everyone.
A global citizen understands these issues. You know climate change exists and affects Nigeria. You understand global poverty and inequality. You know terrorism is a global challenge. You cannot act without understanding.
Respecting global diversity
The world has hundreds of cultures, religions and languages. A global citizen respects this diversity.
You do not have to agree with everyone, but you respect their right to exist and practise their beliefs. When you respect diversity, you can work with people different from you.
Thinking systemically
Problems are complex. They have multiple causes. Solving them requires understanding systems.
A global citizen thinks systemically. You understand how problems interconnect. You look for root causes, not just symptoms.
Taking responsibility
You are part of global systems. You consume goods made globally. You contribute to global problems (through pollution and consumption) and to solutions (through choices and actions).
A global citizen takes responsibility. You know your actions affect the world.
Communicating across borders
With technology, you can communicate globally. You might collaborate with people from different countries. A global citizen communicates effectively across cultural and language differences.
Acting on values
Understanding issues is not enough. You must act, through your work, choices, volunteering and advocacy. A global citizen acts globally according to their values.
How can Nigeria build global citizenship?

These are global citizens contributing to Nigeria and the world.
How can you be an active global citizen?
Learn about global issues
Read global news. Understand climate change, inequality and global conflicts. Know what is happening in the world. Do not only know about Nigeria; know about the world.
Understand your global impact
Your consumption affects the world. The clothes you buy, the food you eat and the energy you use all have global impacts. Be conscious of your impact and make choices that benefit the world.
Learn languages
English is global, but learning other languages opens you to other perspectives. Even basic proficiency in another language helps you connect globally.
Engage globally
Through social media, you can engage globally. Follow global conversations. Participate. Share your perspective. Use technology to connect with people worldwide.
Build global relationships
Make friends globally. Communicate with people from different countries. These relationships deepen understanding and create global networks.
Participate in global causes
Climate action, poverty reduction, human rights and education: join global movements. Your participation, multiplied with millions worldwide, creates change.
Study abroad or internationally
If possible, study in another country, or study internationally online. Learn from global perspectives. International experience changes how you see the world.
Work globally
Some of you will work internationally. Whether you do or not, understand global work contexts. Global collaboration is increasingly common.
Advocate for global justice
Speak up for global fairness. Support fair trade. Advocate for developing countries’ rights. Push for global equality. Global justice requires advocates.
Represent Nigeria well
Wherever you are globally, represent Nigeria well. Be the best version of a Nigerian and show the world Nigerian excellence. Your behaviour globally reflects on Nigeria.
What could Nigeria’s global future look like?
These possibilities open up if Nigeria engages actively as a global nation.
Economic possibility
Nigeria becomes a hub for global business. We export more. We attract investment. We create wealth.
Technological possibility
Nigeria becomes a technology hub. We innovate for global markets. We solve global problems with Nigerian innovation.
Political possibility
Nigeria leads globally. We influence international decisions. We solve conflicts. We shape global policy.
Cultural possibility
Nigerian culture becomes even more influential globally. The world learns from us. We are respected for our culture.
Development possibility
Nigeria develops rapidly by learning from global best practices. We solve our problems using global knowledge. We become a development model.
These futures are possible, but they require active global engagement.
What challenges does global engagement bring?
Brain drain
Talented Nigerians leave for better opportunities elsewhere. The nation loses them. While some need to leave, we need people to stay and build Nigeria using global knowledge.
Dependency
Sometimes global engagement creates dependency. We rely too much on outside knowledge or investment. We need to develop our own capacity while engaging globally.
Cultural loss
As global culture spreads, some fear Nigerian culture will be lost. The answer is balance: embrace global culture while preserving Nigerian culture.
Inequality
Global systems sometimes benefit rich countries and hurt poor countries. Nigeria faces this. Global citizens must advocate for global justice and fairness.
How can these obstacles be overcome?
Be intentional
Decide consciously how you will engage globally. Do not just let it happen to you.
Stay rooted
While engaging globally, stay connected to Nigeria. Do not abandon your nation.
Think both/and
You do not have to choose between being Nigerian and being global. You are both. You can embrace global engagement while loving Nigeria.
Build bridges
Connect global and local. Use global knowledge to solve Nigerian problems. Use Nigerian solutions to help globally.
What is your role in Nigeria’s global future?
Your generation will shape Nigeria’s global position. You will:
- Represent Nigeria internationally
- Bring global knowledge home
- Solve global problems
- Participate in global conversations
- Show the world what Nigeria is
- Build Nigeria into a global leader
This is your role and your responsibility.
The world needs Nigeria
The world needs Nigeria for more than our resources. It needs your perspective, your culture, your innovation and your solutions. A globalised world needs Nigeria’s voice, ideas and participation.
Nigeria needs engaged global citizens
Nigeria also needs you engaged. It needs young Nigerians who study globally but come back to build, who work internationally but invest in Nigeria, and who learn from the world but stay rooted at home. Nigeria needs global citizens who care about Nigeria.
