What is Crop Yield?

In simple terms, Yield is the total amount of “useful” crop you get at the end of the season.

If you plant 10 seeds of maize and you harvest 50 big cobs, that harvest is your yield. Measuring yield is how a farmer knows if their hard work, the fertilizer they bought, and the rain that fell actually produced a good result.

 

Why Do We Measure Yield? (Importance)

Why not just harvest and eat? Why do we need to measure it?

  • To Know Profit or Loss: A farmer needs to know if the money they spent on seeds and labor was worth it. If the yield is low, they might be losing money.
  • To Compare Methods: If a farmer used organic manure on Plot A and chemical fertilizer on Plot B, measuring the yield is the only way to know which one worked better.
  • Planning for the Future: If you know your land produces 50 bags of rice, you can plan how many bags to sell and how many to keep for your family to eat until the next harvest.
  • National Food Security: The government measures yields across the country to know if there will be enough food for everyone or if the country needs to buy food from abroad.

 

Methods of Measuring Yield

How do we actually “count” the harvest? It depends on the type of crop.

  1. Simple Weighing (Weight per Area) This is the most common method. You harvest everything in a specific area (like a 1-meter by 1-meter square) and put it on a scale.
  • Example: “5kg of tomatoes per square meter.”
  1. Counting (Number per Plant/Area) For crops like oranges, peppers, or cocoa, we often count the number of fruits.
  • Example: “An average of 40 pods per cocoa tree.”
  1. Volumetric Measurement For small grains like rice, millet, or cowpea, we sometimes use containers like bowls, “mudu,” or bags.
  • Example: “20 bags of rice per hectare.”

 

Scientific Method: The Quadrat Method

Scientists and big farmers don’t have time to count every single plant on a 10-hectare farm. Instead, they use a Quadrat.

How it works:

  1. The Tool: A quadrat is a square frame (usually made of wood or metal) that is 1 meter wide and 1 meter long (1m×1m).
  2. Sampling: You throw the frame randomly in different parts of the field.
  3. Harvesting: You harvest only the crops inside that square.
  4. Averaging: You weigh the harvest from those small squares and use a simple calculation to guess what the total yield for the whole big farm will be.

 

Factors that Affect Yield

Not every harvest is a “bumper” harvest. Yield can go up or down based on:

  1. Seed Quality: If the seeds were “tired” or old, the yield will be low.
  2. Soil Fertility: Rich soil equals big harvests.
  3. Weather: Too much rain can drown crops; too little rain can dry them up.
  4. Pests and Diseases: If insects eat half the leaves, the plant won’t have enough energy to make big fruits.

 

Summary for the Student

Measuring yield turns “guessing” into “knowing.” A good horticulturist keeps a record book. They write down how much they harvested each year so they can see if their farm is getting better or worse. Remember: If you can’t measure it, you can’t improve it!

 

Classroom Math Challenge

If a student harvests 2kg of maize from a 1m×1m quadrat, and the whole farm is 100 square meters (100m2), what is the estimated total yield of the farm?

Calculation:

Total Yield=Yield in Quadrat×Total Area

Total Yield=2kg×100

Total Yield=200kg
