Topic: Safety Rules and Workshop Practices

The Invisible Killer (Electrostatic Discharge – ESD)

Have you ever touched a doorknob or another person and felt a tiny “zap” or spark? That is Static Electricity.

To a human, that spark is just a tiny surprise. But to a computer chip, that spark is like a lightning bolt hitting a house. It can fry the “brains” of a phone or a laptop instantly. We call this ESD (Electrostatic Discharge).

How to prevent ESD:

  1. Anti-Static Wrist Strap: This is a band you wear that connects you to the ground. It “drains” the static from your body so you don’t shock the computer.
  2. Touch Metal: Before you touch any green circuit board, touch the metal case of the computer first. This “grounds” you.
  3. The Anti-Static Mat: Always place the phone or motherboard on a special rubber mat, never on a carpet or a woolen cloth (which are “static magnets”).

 

Personal Safety (Protecting YOU)

Before we fix the machine, we must protect the technician.

  • No Loose Clothing: If you are wearing a long tie or a loose “Agbada,” it can get caught in computer fans or snag on sharp parts. Tuck them in!
  • Remove Jewelry: Gold rings, silver chains, and metal watches conduct electricity. If they touch a live wire inside a computer, you could get a nasty burn.
  • Eye Protection: When soldering or clipping tiny wires, pieces of hot metal can fly up. Wear safety glasses!
  • Organize Your Space: A messy desk leads to accidents. If a heavy monitor falls off a cluttered table, it could break your foot.

 

Safe Handling of Tools

Tools are our best friends, but they can be dangerous if used wrongly.

  1. The Soldering Iron: This tool gets hot enough to melt metal (300∘C to 400∘C). Never leave it lying on the table. Always put it back in its stand.
  2. Screwdrivers: Always use the right size. If you use a big screwdriver for a tiny phone screw, you will “strip” the head (destroy it), and the phone will be stuck forever.
  3. Sharp Blades: Always cut away from your body, never towards your fingers.

 

Chemical and Battery Safety

Modern gadgets use Lithium-Ion batteries. These are basically “bottled energy,” and they can be dangerous.

  • Swollen Batteries: If a phone battery looks “fat” or “swollen,” stop! Do not try to squeeze it or poke it with a needle. It can explode or catch fire.
  • Cleaning Chemicals: We often use Isopropyl Alcohol to clean boards. It is very flammable. Keep it away from your soldering iron and never smoke near your workstation.
  • Lead Poisoning: Solder (the wire we melt) often contains lead. Never eat or drink while working, and always wash your hands after fixing a device.

 

The “Golden Rules” of the Workshop

To keep our workshop professional and safe, we follow these 5 rules:

  1. Power Down First: Never work on a computer that is still plugged into the wall. Even if it is “off,” electricity is still hiding inside.
  2. The “One-Hand” Rule: If you must test a live circuit, keep one hand in your pocket. This prevents electricity from flowing through your chest/heart if you get a shock.
  3. Hold Boards by the Edges: Never touch the shiny gold parts or the black chips with your oily fingers. Hold the green board by its dry edges.
  4. No Liquids: Keep your water bottle and minerals far away from the repair table. One spill can ruin a N500,000 laptop.
  5. Report Accidents: If you cut yourself or smell something burning, tell your teacher immediately. Don’t hide it!
