International Organisations and Citizenship SS1 Citizenship & Heritage Studies Lesson Note

To wrap up our study of citizenship, we need to look at the “Big Picture.” Just as your house is part of a street, and your street is part of a city, Nigeria is part of a global neighborhood.

To keep this neighborhood peaceful and organized, countries join groups called International Organizations. Because Nigeria is a member of these groups, you—as a Nigerian citizen—are also connected to them. Let’s look at the four most important ones for us.

ECOWAS (The Neighbors’ Club)

Full Name: Economic Community of West African States.

Think of ECOWAS as a meeting of all the “heads of households” in West Africa. It was actually founded right here in Lagos in 1975!

• The Goal: To make West Africa act like one big country for business. They want people to be able to move and trade freely without stress.
• The Benefit for You: Have you seen the ECOWAS Passport? Because of this organization, you can travel to countries like Ghana, Togo, or Benin Republic without needing a Visa.
• Headquarters: Abuja, Nigeria.

The African Union (The Big Family)

Full Name: African Union (formerly OAU).

If ECOWAS is for our neighbors, the AU is for the whole continent—from Egypt in the North to South Africa in the South.

• The Goal: To unite all African countries, end poverty, and stop wars on the continent. They want “African solutions to African problems.”
• The Benefit for You: The AU works to make sure that being an African is something to be proud of. They help protect the rights of citizens across the continent.
• Headquarters: Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

The Commonwealth (The Historical Friends)

Full Name: The Commonwealth of Nations.

This is a very special group. It is made up of 56 countries that were mostly colonized by Britain in the past. Even though we are now independent, we stay together because we share the same language (English) and similar laws.

• The Goal: To promote democracy, good government, and peace among member nations.
• The Benefit for You: Ever heard of the Commonwealth Games? It’s a huge sports event for member countries. There are also many scholarships available for Nigerian students to study in countries like Canada, Australia, or the UK because of this group.
• Headquarters: London, United Kingdom.

The United Nations (The World Assembly)

Full Name: United Nations (UN).

This is the “Grandfather” of all organizations. It includes almost every country in the world (over 190 countries!). It was formed after World War II to make sure such a terrible war never happens again.

• The Goal: To maintain world peace, protect human rights, and fight global problems like hunger and climate change.
• The Benefit for You: The UN has branches you probably know, like UNICEF (which helps children) and WHO (which helps with health and vaccines). When there is a big problem in the world, the UN is the place where everyone meets to fix it.
• Headquarters: New York, USA.

Summary: Nigeria’s Role in These Groups

Why does this matter to a student?

Being a citizen is not just about what happens in your village. When Nigeria joins these groups, it means:

1. Safety: If a country tries to bully Nigeria, our “friends” in these groups will stand by us.
2. Travel and Study: It is easier for you to see the world because of these connections.
3. Global Identity: You are a Nigerian citizen, a West African citizen, an African citizen, and a Global citizen all at once!

Class Activity:

1. The Logo Hunt: Look at the logos of these four organizations. Which one do you think is the most beautiful? Why?
2. Discussion: If Nigeria left ECOWAS tomorrow, how would it affect a trader who sells clothes in Ghana?

Research: Find out the name of the current Secretary-General of the United Nations.
