The Attributes Of Allah (11-20) JSS3 Islamic Studies Lesson Note

Allah, the Creator of everything, has many beautiful attributes or qualities. Muslims believe that understanding Allah’s attributes helps them to know Allah better and strengthens their faith. The Quran and the teachings of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) mention these attributes. While Allah has 99 beautiful names that describe His qualities, each name points to a specific attribute. This lesson continues our study by focusing on attributes 11 through 20.

Attribute 11: Al-Alim (The All-Knowing)

Allah knows everything that has happened, that is happening now, and that will happen in the future. Nothing is hidden from Allah. He knows our thoughts, feelings, and actions. He knows what is in our hearts. Allah’s knowledge is complete and perfect.

The Quran says: “Allah knows what is in the heavens and what is on earth” (Surah Al-Hujurat, 49:16).

When we understand that Allah is All-Knowing, we become more careful about our actions and thoughts. We know that even if no one else sees what we do, Allah sees and knows everything. This helps us to be honest and good even when we are alone.

Allah’s knowledge is different from human knowledge. Our knowledge is limited and can have mistakes. We learn new things and forget old things. But Allah’s knowledge never changes, never increases or decreases, and is always perfect and complete.

When we face difficult decisions or problems, we can ask Allah for guidance, knowing that He knows what is best for us. His perfect knowledge means He can guide us perfectly.

Attribute 12: Al-Basir (The All-Seeing)

Allah sees everything, everywhere, at all times. Nothing is too small or too hidden for Allah to see. He sees the smallest ant crawling on a black rock in the darkest night. He sees inside our bodies and knows how every cell works.

The Quran says: “Indeed, Allah is All-Hearing, All-Seeing” (Surah Al-Isra, 17:1).

Understanding that Allah is All-Seeing encourages us to do good deeds and avoid bad actions, even when no one else is watching. It reminds us that we are always in Allah’s presence.

Allah’s seeing is not like human seeing. Our sight is limited by distance, darkness, and physical barriers. We can only see what is in front of us. But Allah sees everything, everywhere, without any limitations.

This attribute gives believers comfort, knowing that Allah sees their struggles and efforts. It also serves as a reminder to be mindful of our actions at all times.

Attribute 13: As-Sami (The All-Hearing)

Allah hears everything, no matter how quiet or far away. He hears the whispered prayers of all people at the same time. He hears the sounds of all creatures, from the loudest thunder to the quietest footstep of an ant.

The Quran mentions: “Indeed, my Lord is the Hearer of supplication” (Surah Ibrahim, 14:39).

Knowing that Allah is All-Hearing gives Muslims confidence that their prayers are always heard. Even when they pray silently in their hearts, Allah hears them. This is a great comfort, especially during difficult times.

Allah’s hearing is not like human hearing. We can only hear sounds within a certain range and distance. We miss many sounds, and we cannot hear everyone at once. But Allah hears everything, everywhere, without any confusion or difficulty.

This attribute teaches us to be careful about what we say. Since Allah hears everything, we should avoid saying hurtful or disrespectful things. We should use our speech for good purposes, like speaking kind words and remembering Allah.

Attribute 14: Al-Qadir (The All-Powerful)

Allah has complete power over everything. Nothing is too difficult for Him. He created the universe and can create anything He wishes. When Allah wants something to happen, He simply says “Be,” and it becomes.

The Quran states: “Indeed, Allah has power over all things” (Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:20).

Allah’s power has no limits or weaknesses. He never gets tired or needs help. He controls everything in the universe, from the movement of galaxies to the beating of our hearts.

Understanding Allah’s power helps Muslims face difficulties with courage. They know that Allah can change any situation and solve any problem. Nothing is impossible for Him.

This attribute also teaches us to rely on Allah rather than being too proud of our own strength. Human power is very limited compared to Allah’s power. We need Allah’s help and support in everything we do.

When Muslims say “Insha’Allah” (if Allah wills) when talking about future plans, they are recognizing Allah’s power to make things happen or not happen.

Attribute 15: Al-Latif (The Most Subtle, The Most Kind)

Allah is extremely kind and gentle with His creation. He shows kindness in ways that are sometimes subtle and not immediately obvious. He gives blessings that we might not notice at first but that greatly benefit us.

The Quran says: “Indeed, my Lord is Subtle in what He wills” (Surah Yusuf, 12:100).

The word “Latif” in Arabic has two meanings. It means someone who is gentle and kind, and it also means someone who understands the finest details and most subtle matters.

Allah’s kindness can be seen in how He designed the world to support life. He provides for all creatures in ways that are perfectly suited to their needs. He sends help in unexpected ways when we are in difficulty.

This attribute teaches us to look for Allah’s kindness in our daily lives, even in small things that we might take for granted. It also encourages us to be kind and gentle with others, following Allah’s example.

Allah’s subtlety means He works in ways we might not immediately understand. Sometimes what seems difficult or bad at first turns out to be good for us later. Allah sees the whole picture that we cannot see.

Attribute 16: Al-Khabir (The All-Aware)

Allah is aware of the smallest details and the hidden aspects of everything. He knows the secrets of all things. Nothing escapes His awareness, whether it is visible or invisible, spoken or unspoken.

The Quran mentions: “And Allah is All-Aware of what you do” (Surah Al-Hujurat, 49:13).

Allah’s awareness is complete and perfect. He is aware of our innermost thoughts and feelings. He knows what troubles us even when we don’t express it. He is aware of things that happen in the farthest corners of the universe.

This attribute reminds us that we cannot hide anything from Allah. It encourages us to be honest and sincere, knowing that Allah is aware of our true intentions.

Understanding that Allah is All-Aware also brings comfort. When we feel that others don’t understand what we’re going through, we know that Allah is fully aware of our situation and feelings.

In times of injustice, knowing that Allah is aware of everything gives believers patience and hope. Nothing will be overlooked or forgotten by Allah, who will judge with perfect justice based on His complete awareness.

Attribute 17: Al-Halim (The Forbearing)

Allah is extremely patient and forbearing. Even when people disobey Him or do wrong, He does not rush to punish them. He gives them time to realize their mistakes and change their ways.

The Quran says: “And know that Allah is Forbearing and Forgiving” (Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:235).

Allah’s forbearance is a great blessing for us. If He punished us immediately for every mistake or sin, life would be impossible. Instead, He gives us chances to repent and become better.

This attribute teaches us to be patient with others. If Allah, who is perfect, can be patient with imperfect humans, then we should try to be patient with each other’s mistakes and weaknesses.

Allah’s forbearance does not mean He ignores wrongdoing forever. It means He gives time for people to turn back to the right path. This shows His wisdom and mercy.

Understanding Allah’s forbearance helps believers maintain hope even when they make mistakes. They know that Allah’s door of forgiveness remains open as long as they sincerely repent.

Attribute 18: Al-Azim (The Magnificent, The Great)

Allah is greater than anything we can imagine. His greatness cannot be fully understood by human minds. He is magnificent in His essence, His attributes, His power, and His actions.

The Quran states: “And glorify the name of your Lord, the Most Great” (Surah Al-Waqi’ah, 56:96).

When Muslims say “Allahu Akbar” (Allah is Greater), they are acknowledging this attribute. No matter how great something seems, Allah is greater.

Allah’s greatness is absolute. Unlike human greatness, which is relative and temporary, Allah’s greatness never diminishes. No one can match or come close to His greatness.

Understanding Allah’s magnificence produces humility in believers. It reminds them of their proper place as Allah’s servants. At the same time, it gives them honor to be connected to such a Great Lord.

This attribute also gives comfort during difficulties. No problem is too great for Allah to solve. No enemy is too powerful for Allah to overcome. Allah’s greatness is a source of strength for believers.

Attribute 19: Al-Ghafur (The All-Forgiving)

Allah forgives sins again and again. His forgiveness is vast and available to anyone who sincerely asks for it. No sin is too big for Allah to forgive if a person truly repents.

The Quran mentions: “Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful” (Surah Al-Nisa, 4:23).

Allah wants to forgive His servants. He is pleased when people turn to Him seeking forgiveness. Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) taught that Allah stretches out His hand at night to forgive those who sinned during the day, and stretches out His hand during the day to forgive those who sinned during the night.

This attribute gives hope to believers who make mistakes. They know that no matter what they have done, the door to Allah’s forgiveness is always open if they sincerely repent.

Allah’s forgiveness is complete. When He forgives a sin, it is as if it never happened. He removes its effects and may even turn it into a good deed if the repentance is sincere enough.

Understanding Allah’s forgiveness encourages believers to also forgive others. If they hope for Allah’s forgiveness, they should practice forgiveness themselves.

Attribute 20: Ash-Shakur (The Most Appreciative)

Allah appreciates and rewards even the smallest good deed many times over. He never overlooks or forgets any good action, no matter how small it might seem.

The Quran says: “If you loan Allah a goodly loan, He will multiply it for you and forgive you. And Allah is Most Appreciative and Forbearing” (Surah At-Taghabun, 64:17).

Allah rewards good deeds far more than they deserve. A single good deed can be multiplied by ten, seventy, seven hundred, or even more times in reward. No other being is as appreciative as Allah.

This attribute encourages believers to do good even when it seems small or unnoticed by people. They know that Allah sees and appreciates every good action.

Allah’s appreciation is perfect and complete. Unlike humans, who might forget or not fully appreciate what others do for them, Allah never forgets and His appreciation never diminishes.

Understanding that Allah is Most Appreciative gives believers energy and enthusiasm to continue doing good works, even when they face difficulties or lack appreciation from people.

How These Attributes Help Us in Daily Life

Understanding these attributes of Allah helps Muslims in many practical ways:

Knowing that Allah is All-Knowing and All-Seeing helps them be honest and careful about their actions, even when alone.

Believing that Allah is All-Hearing encourages them to pray and speak good words, knowing Allah hears everything.

Understanding Allah’s power gives them confidence and hope when facing difficult situations.

Recognizing Allah’s kindness and awareness helps them notice the blessings in their lives and be grateful.

Appreciating Allah’s forbearance and forgiveness gives them hope when they make mistakes and encourages them to be patient with others.

Acknowledging Allah’s greatness puts life’s challenges in perspective and reminds them of their purpose as Allah’s servants.

Understanding that Allah appreciates every good deed motivates them to do good even when it seems small or goes unnoticed by people.

When we truly understand that Allah is All-Knowing, we become more mindful of our actions. When we grasp that Allah is Most Forgiving, we become more hopeful and more forgiving toward others. This is how knowledge of Allah transforms believers and brings them closer to their Creator.
