Topic: Export Promotion In Agriculture I – III
Definition and objectives of export promotion in agriculture
Definition: export promotion are government policy measure that encourages export activities at all levels.
Export promotion starts with the production of the export product and ends with the consumption of such product outside the country. It involves the following:
- Identification of the country’s export resources or potentials such as in agriculture.
- Exploitation of the export resource.
- Development of these export resources.
- Provision of infrastructure or facilities that aid production, exploitation, and marketing of these export resources.
Objectives of export promotion in international marketing
The basic objectives of export promotion measures include:
- To promote the development of export-related industries in Nigeria.
- To promote the development and diversification of Nigeria’s export trade.
- To promote the implementation of export policy and programs of the Nigerian government.
4. To coordinate and monitor export production activities in Nigeria. - To collect and disseminate to local manufacturers any information on products available to export.
- To engage in export promotion services.
- To administer grants and other benefits related to export promotion and development.
- To maintain an adequate and effective representation of another country.
- To provide technical assistance to local exporters
- To organize and plan the participation of Nigeria in international trade fairs and exhibitions in other countries.
Examples of Nigerian export products
Exports from Nigeria could oil and non-oil products. There are several items and produce that can be exported. Some of them include the following:
- Cassava flour
- Cotton
- Snail
- Ginger
- Pure honey
- Shrimps and prawns
- Sesame seed
- Leather and footwear
- palm kernel oil
- Charcoal
- cashew nuts
- Cocoa butter
- Shea butter
- Chili pepper
- plantain
- Zobo leaf
- Garlic
- Rubber
- Coconuts
- Kola nuts
- Timber (Gmelina)
- Palm oil
- Ground nut
- Walnut.
Benefits of export promotion
The following are the basic benefits of export promotion:
- Foreign exchange earning: Export promotion leads to the expansion of goods for foreign markets which are sources of foreign exchange.
- Efficiency in production: Export promotion encourages industries to produce at high capacity in other to meet demand from both domestic and foreign markets.
- Employment creation: Increase production through export promotion leads to expansion of local industries. This leads to job creation and a reduction in unemployment.
- Better use of resources: Increase the production of exports and foster better and more efficient use of locally available resources.
- National growth and development: Revenue generated from exports can be used by the government to develop the country. For instance, it is used for providing infrastructures such as road health care services and other social amenities.
