  • Building emotional relationships then requesting money for emergencies
  • Claiming to need travel money to visit the victim
  • Requesting funds for medical treatment or family crises
  • Asking for money to complete business deals
  1. BUSINESS OPPORTUNITY SCAMS Description: Offering fake investment or business opportunities Examples:
  • Promises of high returns from non-existent investments
  • Offers to help transfer large sums for commission

  • Franchise opportunities that don’t exist

Punishment for Advance Fee Fraud in Nigeria:

Under the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act:

First Offense:

  • Imprisonment: 7 to 20 years in prison without option of fine
  • Heavy Fines: N5 million to N25 million naira
  • Asset Forfeiture: Seizure of all property obtained through fraud
  • Computer Ban: Prohibition from using internet and devices
  • International Blacklist: Travel restrictions and cooperation with foreign agencies

Repeat Offense:

  • Imprisonment: 20 years to life in prison
  • Maximum Fines: Up to N50 million naira or more

  1. PLACEMENT Description: Introducing illegal money into the financial system Examples:
  • Depositing cash from drug sales into bank accounts
  • Using cash to buy expensive items like cars or jewelry
  • Investing stolen money in businesses
  • Converting cash to other forms like money orders
  • Sending money through multiple transfers
  1. LAYERING Description: Moving money through complex transactions to hide its origin Examples:
  • Transferring money between multiple bank accounts
  • Converting money to different currencies repeatedly
  • Moving funds through shell companies
  • Using offshore accounts in different countries
  • Creating complex business transactions to obscure sources
  1. INTEGRATION Description: Making laundered money appear legitimate Examples:

  • Living off proceeds appearing to come from legal sources

Common Money Laundering Methods:
