Lesson Note: The Individual and the Society

Subject: Social and Citizenship Studies

Class: JSS 1

Topic: The Relationship between Self, Family, and Community

The Individual (The “Self”)

The Individual is just one single person—you! You are the starting point of everything in Social Studies. Every person has their own name, talents, and character.

However, as an individual, you cannot survive all by yourself. You need other people to help you grow, learn, and stay safe. This is why we say “no man is an island.”

The Family (The First Circle)

The Family is the smallest and most important group in society. It is the first place an individual belongs.

Why the Family Matters to the Individual:

  • Love and Care: It is in the family that you first learn what love is.
  • Basic Needs: Your parents or guardians provide your food, clothes, and shelter.
  • Learning: You learn how to speak, how to eat properly, and how to respect elders from your family. This is called Socialization.

Types of Family:

  1. Nuclear Family: Father, Mother, and Children.
  2. Extended Family: Uncles, Aunts, Grandparents, and Cousins added to the nuclear family.

The Community (The Larger Circle)

A Community (or Society) is a group of many families living in the same area or sharing the same way of life. When many families come together, they form a village, a town, or a city.

How the Individual and Family relate to the Community:

  • Rules and Laws: The community makes rules so that everyone can live in peace.
  • Shared Services: The community provides things that one family cannot build alone, like markets, schools, hospitals, and roads.
  • Protection: Members of a community look out for each other.

The Chain of Relationship

Think of this relationship like a chain or a set of circles. If one part is weak, the whole thing suffers.

Level Role
Self (Individual) To be well-behaved, study hard, and help at home.
Family To train the child and provide what they need to be a good person.
Community To provide a safe and clean environment for the family to live in.

The Connection:

  1. Individuals make up the Family.
  2. Families make up the Community.
  3. A Community of good individuals and families makes a Great Nation.

Summary for Students

  • The Self: You are a unique person, but you need others.
  • The Family: Your first “school” where you learn values like honesty and respect.
  • The Community: The place where we all work together to make life better for everyone.

Classroom Activity

  1. Draw three circles: a small one inside a medium one, and both inside a large one. Label them Self, Family, and Community.
  2. Write down one thing your family has taught you that makes you a better person in school today.
  3. Name one thing in your neighborhood (community) that everyone uses together (e.g., the street light or the borehole).
