Procedures For Crop Production Basic 5 Agricultural Science Lesson Note
Download Lesson NoteTopic: Procedures For Crop Production
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
By the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to:
- Outline procedures for cultivating crops
- Identify pre-planting activities
- Carry out pre-planting operations on the farm
PREVIOUS KNOWLEDGE
Pupils have learned about crop production and classification of crops in the previous lesson.
INTRODUCTION
Growing crops successfully requires following certain steps in the right order. Just like cooking requires a recipe, crop production has procedures that farmers must follow to get good harvest.
LESSON CONTENT
1. PROCEDURES FOR CULTIVATING CROPS
The main procedures for cultivating crops include:
Step 1: Planning
- Decide what crops to grow
- Choose the right season
- Prepare farming calendar
- Get seeds and tools ready
Step 2: Pre-planting Activities
- Land clearing
- Land preparation
- Soil testing
- Seed selection and treatment
Step 3: Planting Activities
- Seed sowing
- Transplanting seedlings
- Proper spacing
Step 4: Post-planting Activities
- Watering/irrigation
- Weeding
- Fertilizer application
- Pest and disease control
Step 5: Harvesting Activities
- Determining harvest time
- Harvesting crops
- Processing and storage
2. PRE-PLANTING ACTIVITIES
Pre-planting activities are all the things farmers do before putting seeds in the ground.
- LAND CLEARING
- Remove trees, shrubs, and bushes
- Clear weeds and grass
- Remove stumps and roots
- Burn or pack away cleared materials
- LAND PREPARATION
- Tillage: Breaking up the soil to make it soft
- Primary tillage: First breaking of soil (ploughing)
- Secondary tillage: Further breaking and smoothing (harrowing)
- Ridging: Making raised beds for crops like yam
- Making beds: Creating flat or raised areas for planting
- Making furrows: Creating channels for water drainage
- SOIL TESTING
- Check if soil is good for growing crops
- Test soil pH (how acidic or alkaline it is)
- Check soil fertility
- Determine what nutrients are needed
- SEED SELECTION AND TREATMENT
- Choose healthy, good quality seeds
- Test seeds for germination (ability to grow)
- Treat seeds with chemicals to prevent diseases
- Store seeds properly before planting
- TOOL PREPARATION
- Clean and sharpen farming tools
- Repair broken tools
- Get all needed tools ready
3. CARRYING OUT PRE-PLANTING OPERATIONS
LAND CLEARING OPERATIONS:
Tools needed:
- Cutlass/machete

- Axe

- Hoe

- Rake

Steps:
- Cut down small trees and bushes with cutlass
- Use axe for bigger trees
- Remove stumps and roots
- Rake away debris
- Allow cleared area to dry
LAND PREPARATION OPERATIONS:
Tools needed:
- Hoe
- Cutlass
- Rake
- Tractor (for large farms)
Steps for Manual Tillage:
- Use hoe to break up hard soil
- Turn soil over to bury weeds
- Break large soil clumps
- Rake to make soil smooth
- Make ridges or beds as needed
SEED PREPARATION OPERATIONS:
Steps:
- Select clean, healthy seeds
- Remove damaged or diseased seeds
- Test few seeds for germination
- Treat seeds if necessary
- Store in cool, dry place
4. IMPORTANCE OF PRE-PLANTING ACTIVITIES
- Makes soil suitable for planting
- Helps seeds germinate better
- Reduces competition from weeds
- Prevents pest and disease problems
- Increases crop yield
- Makes farming operations easier
EVALUATION QUESTIONS
- List the five main procedures for cultivating crops
- What are pre-planting activities?
- Name four pre-planting activities
- Why is land clearing important?
- What tools are used for land clearing?
- What is the difference between primary and secondary tillage?
- Why do farmers test their seeds before planting?
- Give three reasons why pre-planting activities are important
- What should be done after clearing the land?
- How can farmers prepare their tools for farming?
ASSIGNMENT
- Visit a farm in your community and observe the pre-planting activities being carried out
- List five tools you saw being used for land preparation
- Draw and label three tools used in pre-planting activities
- Ask a farmer to explain why they clear their land before planting
PRACTICAL ACTIVITY
On the school farm:
- Practice land clearing on a small plot
- Use hoe to prepare soil for planting
- Practice seed selection using beans or maize
- Make ridges for yam planting
CONCLUSION
Pre-planting activities are very important for successful crop production. Proper land clearing and preparation help crops grow better and give good harvest. Farmers must not skip these important steps.
