Topic: Branches of Agriculture and People Involved

What are Branches of Agriculture?

Branches of agriculture are different parts or types of farming activities that people do to produce food, animals, and other useful things.

Main Branches of Agriculture

  1. Crop Production (Farming)

Growing plants for food and other uses

Types of Crops:

  • Food crops: Rice, yam, cassava, maize, beans
  • Cash crops: Cocoa, cotton, palm oil, groundnuts
  • Vegetables: Tomatoes, pepper, onions, lettuce
  • Fruits: Oranges, mangoes, bananas, pineapples
  1. Animal Husbandry (Livestock)

Raising and caring for animals

Types of Animals:

  • Large animals: Cattle, goats, sheep, pigs
  • Small animals: Chickens, ducks, rabbits, guinea fowls
  • Fish farming: Raising fish in ponds
  • Beekeeping: Keeping bees for honey
  1. Forestry

Growing and managing trees and forests

Activities:

  • Tree planting: Growing trees for wood and paper
  • Forest protection: Taking care of natural forests
  • Timber production: Cutting trees for building
  • Conservation: Protecting wildlife and environment
  1. Fisheries

Catching and raising fish

Types:

  • Ocean fishing: Catching fish from the sea
  • River fishing: Catching fish from rivers and lakes
  • Fish farming: Raising fish in artificial ponds
  • Processing: Cleaning, drying, and packaging fish
  1. Agricultural Engineering

Using machines and technology in farming

Activities:

  • Farm machinery: Tractors, harvesters, plows
  • Irrigation: Watering crops with pipes and sprinklers
  • Storage facilities: Building barns and warehouses
  • Processing equipment: Machines for cleaning and packaging

People Involved in Agriculture

  1. Primary Producers

Farmers

  • What they do: Grow crops and raise animals
  • Types: Small-scale farmers, large-scale farmers
  • Work: Planting, weeding, harvesting, selling

Pastoralists (Herders)

  • What they do: Move animals to find grass and water
  • Animals: Cattle, goats, sheep
  • Examples: Fulani cattle herders in Nigeria

Fishermen

  • What they do: Catch fish from water bodies
  • Types: Ocean fishermen, river fishermen
  • Tools: Nets, boats, fishing lines
  1. Support Workers

Farm Workers/Laborers

  • What they do: Help farmers with farm work
  • Tasks: Planting, weeding, harvesting, feeding animals
  • Payment: Daily wages or seasonal contracts

Agricultural Extension Officers

  • What they do: Teach farmers better farming methods
  • Help with: New farming techniques, pest control, fertilizers
  • Training: Organize farmer training programs

Veterinarians (Animal Doctors)

  • What they do: Take care of sick animals
  • Services: Give medicine, vaccinations, health checks
  • Important for: Keeping animals healthy and productive
  1. Business People

Agricultural Input Dealers

  • What they sell: Seeds, fertilizers, farming tools, pesticides
  • Location: Agricultural markets, farm supply stores
  • Help farmers: Get what they need for farming

Agricultural Produce Buyers

  • What they do: Buy crops from farmers
  • Sell to: Markets, food processing companies, exporters
  • Role: Connect farmers to larger markets

Food Processors

  • What they do: Turn raw crops into finished products
  • Examples: Making garri from cassava, oil from palm fruits
  • Add value: Make products last longer and more valuable
  1. Service Providers

Agricultural Researchers

  • What they do: Study new ways to improve farming
  • Work on: Better seeds, pest control, soil improvement
  • Goal: Help farmers produce more food

Agricultural Engineers

  • What they do: Design farm machines and systems
  • Create: Irrigation systems, farm equipment, storage facilities
  • Help with: Making farming easier and more efficient

Agricultural Loan Officers

  • What they do: Give money to farmers for farming
  • Help with: Buying seeds, fertilizers, farm equipment
  • Support: Small-scale and large-scale farmers

EXERCISES

Exercise 1: Fill in the Blanks

  1. Branches of agriculture are different ________ of farming activities
  2. ________ production means growing plants for food
  3. Animal ________ means raising and caring for animals
  4. ________ involves growing and managing trees

Exercise 2: True or False

  1. Agriculture has only one branch ____
  2. Forestry is about growing trees ____
  3. Fisheries only involves ocean fishing ____
  4. Agricultural engineering uses machines ____

Exercise 3: Match the Branch

Draw lines to connect each activity with its branch:

  • Growing rice → Animal husbandry
  • Raising chickens → Crop production
  • Planting trees → Forestry
  • Catching fish → Fisheries

Exercise 4: Types of People

Write “P” for Primary Producer, “S” for Support Worker, or “B” for Business People:

  1. Farmers ____
  2. Agricultural extension officers ____
  3. Input dealers ____
  4. Fishermen ____
  5. Veterinarians ____

Exercise 5: Choose the Right Branch

Circle which branch these belong to:

  1. Growing maize: Crop production / Animal husbandry
  2. Raising goats: Forestry / Animal husbandry
  3. Fish farming: Fisheries / Crop production
  4. Using tractors: Agricultural engineering / Forestry
